Surging idle on a 93 Civic EX

I give up...maybe you all can help me:

When idling, my car jumps from 1k-3k RPMS (sometimes its more like 1.5k-2.5k depending on how long its been running)

It's not just when its cold..but when it's cold it goes crazy....even if the tach stays still while idling, it will idle really high..like at 2k RPMS....

The only time I've ever seen it idle normal..is when I go to work in Sacramento, which is like 2000ft. less altitude than where I live..it takes me like an hour to get there so my car is warmed up...and also my car runs better at lower altitudes...

Anyway, I'm pretty sure it's not a vacuum leak...anyone else know what it is?

I've heard from all different people that it's: Fuel injector problem, O2 sensor problem, vacuum leak, I've heard all different stuff...

Anyway...if you know what's up please tell me..thanks.

It could be your fast idle valve which is on the bottom side of your throttle body. I had the same problem and replaced the valve - problem solved.

Haven't heard of one of those....maybe that's it though.

I was thinking more along the lines of a TSP(Throttle Position Sensor).

ok look at your headers there should be an 02 sensor plug or screwed into the bottom of the headers.if theres not then thats your problem you could also just have a bad o2 sensor and need to get a new one my friend has the exact same car as you and his o2 sensor is not plugged in cause the dumbass bought the wrong headers so more than likely thats the problem his will surge at idle then after about 30 minutes it will quit

I have the same Problem. I have tryid everything from o2 sensor to the TPS and nothing worked. I would try the FAST IDLE VALVE, it's mounted to the bottom of the T-body, it's the thing with the 2 small coolant lines running to it. The idea behind it is it's filled with a wax that holds a valve open to let extra air through to control rough idle during warm up, and is supposed to close after, but if the wax loses consistancy it will just keep the valve open. If that's not it try ajusting main idle screw on bottom of throttle plate, try that first.

Blackblur you f*cking dumbass....first of all...my HEADER(singular) isn't aftermarket...it's an exhaust manifold...and it is not an 02 sensor....That doesn't even relate to my problem....

@92JDMLX:
-I would do that and it would fix it...but after my car has been running for like an hour and at a low altitude...it sometimes idles at the normal 750rpm....and if I lowered it anymore my car would die :/

Anyone else know what it might be? Thanks for the input..except Blackblur who is gay.

Why are you hatin' on him? He told you several things that it could've been.

Also, just because you don't have aftermarket HEADERS doesn't mean that you don't have a fucking O2 sensor. The O2 sensor could very well have something to do with the problem ,since you choose to think that it's not realted to your problem...

You just made yourself look like a dumbass man.... That is my :2cents: .

check all of your vaccuum lines too, a vaccuum leak will cause your idle to surge. Also, there is an O2 sensor towards the bottom of your exhaust manifold, I've never been aware that that could also cause the problem, it's worth checking out.

-I know there is an 02 sensor on my HEADER(yes it is singular..) aka my exhaust manifold...I just never heard of something like that causing this type of problem...

Yes, the Oxygen sensor could be the problem, but seriously, who would ever install an aftermarket header and leave their oxygen sensor unscrewed???? It's not there to make the car look good, it tells the ECU how much oxygen the engine needs and if it's not working properly, you could run rich or the other way around. I've had the same type of problem where the car starts ideling crazy AFTER it warms up. I changed the Oxygen and the MAP Sensor. I'll just have to take it to the dealership i guess.
