Engine Swapping Question

Can someone clear this up for me. From what i've heard and read on this and other sites all D series engines will drop right in with minor changes such as wiring. All B series engines need new mounts and wiring may be needed. H and K series have been played around with and have been successful but are either too heavy or need new mounts.Other manufacturers engine have been used succesfully also. So if I am wrong please correct me on anything just no flaming.

O yeah I'm looking for an CRX HF 2g. If anyone has one and lives in the Montgomery, AL area please contact me as soon as possible. This is to be a project car so I'll take one with a blown or dead engine, as long as the exterior, interior are in good shape, and it will be driveable.

Your right in the general sense. You will need new mounts for anything that is not a D-series, and any d-series from 92 and up will require that you transplant the driver's side mount from your stock motor to make it work. There will be some rewiring required if you don't already have MPFI, but if not, little to no wiring will need done, short of adding vtec. I have only heard of h and f series swaps, but not any k successful k series swaps, but yes, they don't work well due to weight. I do know of a local shop that put a mitsu 4G63T (Turbo Eclipse) motor in a 5g civic, and I've seen a couple of SR20DET Nissan motors in 4g civics, so yes, it can be done, if you throw enough $$$ at it!

this is what i have learned about d vs b series swaps....

b series has a higher whp potential, however d series is much cheaper to mod

d series is more responsive off the line, b series has higher rpm range

b series aftermarket & maintance parts are more expensive

d series bolts right in & mates to 4th gen tranny

both engines have potential. i can't say one is better than the other. that depends on the person buying it...depends on money. you don't want to buy a b series if you can't afford to upgrade & maintain. it depends on future plans. you don't want to buy a d series if you want to exceed say 200whp. it depends on swapping skill level. d series is an easier start as it all bolts right in. don't buy a d series if you like to hold your gear over 6000rpm...then again, don't buy a b series if your on the other end and you like a really responsive engine that raps out quicker.

you really just need to find whats right for you. in our house i'm all about the d and he's all about the b. i love getting him off the line, but he always stomps me holding his gear. one of these days i'll add turbo and be able to hold my own...until he adds turbo :grinno: at that point i'll be tapped out in hp. but that's okay, i'll still have $$$ in my pocket to race over to the mall :thefinger

4GZChatch are you sure about the weight thing. I have heard that they are only a few pounds heavier than B series. Any ways thanks everbody for your posts. They were helpful. Um about the driver's side mount did they cahnge it after '92 or something? That is the first time I've ever heard of that mentioned. Also the D series is for really good response, but can't go over 200whp or has noone pushed it that far before? See ya'll later. :sunglasse

Ooops forgot something. How many of those engines can be hooked up to an awd system? Just curious. :sunglasse

No they are backwards, intake manifold is in the front and the headers are in the back between the firewall and engine!!

The b-series sits in the wrong direction...the aitr goes in from the back and out the front (from the headers). IN the K-series, air goes in through the front and goes out the back..THE RIGHT WAY. It's common sense.

Why don't we all just throw a metric fuck-ton of money at our cars and wedge an SB 350 under the hood? Rear wheel drive Civics doing donuts, now THAT would be fun :P

Ok, I don't really care about the way an engine sits as long as it works and they both do. I don't have a metric fuck-ton of money so count me out. What the hell is going on in people's minds these days. Any ways I haeva queation. I'm working on my CRX HF right now and was thinking about doing a D17A2 swap. Well it is a D series so it will fit right in with wiring and a little what not. Here is my question, should I stick with the HF tranny or go a head and switch it out for something different? Please keep in mind that I'm 14 and will need this car for when I'm 16 as a daily driver. I still want good gas milage, but want a bigger engine to get used to more power gradually. Future plans a B series then a K series and eventually a different manufacturer all together. :sunglasse

swap the hf tranny for a dx or si tranny much better gear ratios.

aww sweet sounds like you got a few years to plan ur car out! that HF tranny has to go! best all around tranny would just be a stock si tranny. you could hybrid it and go zc/si hybrid tranny. as far as the d17 i have no clue

Man I'm pissed. The car I was working on was taking a way from me. Check this '88 CRX HF, my future car, in perfect exterior and interior condition, only thing is a blown engine. I told the dude I will pay him off gradually, bad idea I know, and have started working on it. First, got the hood off and was in the middle of gettin gmy tools and the owner comes up and says "someelse has bought the car and he needs it back". he gives back all my money and takes with him. So I ask again anyone in the montgomery,al area with a 2g CRX HF please contact me as soon as possible. Thanks in advance. Hey also what is this zc/si thing you are talking about? One more thing, do you guys really think it is good to start on my car this early? Just curious. :sunglasse

I was looking at my options for engines again and came across the D16Y8 I think it was. Correct me if I'm wrong, the 16 is what I'm not sure of. Anyways I guessing switch the tranny for SI or something like that if I do it. Please pardon my smartassiness. Still looking for a CRX HF builder upper. :sunglasse
