okay i plan on getting my car painted in spring, and wanted to have the lines around my door handles and my license plate smoothed out before i get it's painted (naturally). is this something i can do on my own? It seems like i would just need to apply something (putty?) and smooth it out, but that just seems too simple to be right.

Please don't use bondo for that. Use fiberglass, you can mix a little bit of bondo in with the fiberglass to make it spread easier, but please don't use bondo, it WILL even from the daily raod vibrations. You can do this yourself, it's not too hard. The hardest part will be smoothing it out, might want to have the shop do that part before they paint it, it would suck if you had some body blemishes in your new paint.

This is a mod for a show car/trailer queen car... It will crack and leave marks over time on a street car. If you do it, I give it a year, tops, untill you'll get pissed of and regret doing it.

The problem is metal is not flexible at all, the handle is plastic and is a little flexible, any filler used whether it be flexible or not wont change the fact that you are connecting something metal to plastic... which will have crack in between because the paint wont hold. Every time someone pulls on the handle, it will cause slight flex... every time the door is slammed closed, the vibrations will cause flex, every time it gets really cold or really hot, the metal and plastic will expand and shrink diffently which will cause flex. Theres nothing you can do to make it work...... WAIT A COTTON PICKING MINUTE!!!!!!
I just had an idea just as I was typing this.... DAMN!!! THIS WILL WORK!!!!!! I'M A FREAKIN GENIOUS!!!!!
Ok... there ARE aftermarket 6th gen door handles all made in CHROME METAL! All you need to do is fine this, and weld! Metal on metal will have no flex! This will be a perfect way to have your handles molded on smoothly!!!!! I saw these handles around 3 years ago at www.asylumms.com I dont know if they still have it, or where else it could be, but I do know it did exist once, so you can find it new or used.
