They're not the best cars made, but they really intrigue me. I'm sure I'd love them more if I actually saw one (no, I've never ever seen one, even though I see about 30 Ferrari's a year). I want to see pics of Yogs' D :D

Indifferent build quality.

Ho-hum handling.

Underpowered.

Neato styling.

I think they're kind of cool, despite myself.

Then again, I think anything that's a little different is good :)

A typical product of its age,all the thinking went into the styling, handling, durability and build quality were not considered selling points back then.A shame, because they are nice to look at....

Fun to drive! Handling that beats the F out of anything else I've driven. Seriously. Can you say "engineered by Lotus"? I remember driving down a backroad with my friend. I placed my drink on the center console so i could take a turn. My friend stared in shock as the drink did not tip (25 MPH curve at 60MPH). Can you say "low center of gravity"? Lotus has my respect!

Sufficiently fast for an everyday car. You've gotta remember that the DMC was marketed as a daily driver / last forever / get parts at your local store type of car. 0-60 in 7 seconds is pretty good in my book for a daily driver (made in the early 80's). Today's Subaru WRX runs high 5's, but is ugly, no leather, turbos will wear out, etc...

Easiest car in the world to get into / out of (thanks to the gullwing doors). I can park about a foot from a wall and still open the door all the way. Can't do that with Viper...

Alas, I have a love-hate relationship with 'em. Drunken Irishman quality control mixed with British eletrical components. I own one (used to own two), and love or hate just depends upon the day.

I think Deloreans were the coolest cars ever made. Seriously, I'd take a Delorean over a Porche, or a Viper any day. The only complaint I ever had with the Delorean was its serious lack of power, and no cup holders. Everything else is great. Especially the gull wing doors, oh how I miss those gull wing doors(You never realize it until you're stuck with a normal car).

Just so you know DMC12, thats right, I do have an old Honda- but as i was explaining in mu post i dont know that much stuff about deloreans. Sorry about that... being the minority on AF has me on the defensive. You wouldn't believe how many "flamers" write dumb stuff when they read what car I have. They say things like "My '02 Mustang can whip your azz, foo!" and I can't help thinking that their car is 20 YEARS NEWER... so it is no real accomplishment!

Anyway, yes the majority of DeLoreans are in pretty sad shape. They are dull with beat up interiors and look pretty sad. My DMC was very sad when I bought it (was rolled over), but now it is pretty sweet! I'll post good pics some day... I really want to get a pic in front of Neptune's Net (as seen in Fast & Furious). I drive by it all the time.

I don't know what they were thinking by leaving cup holders out... but then again can you think of any other 1981-83 car that had cup holders? Seems they're a recent invention.

I'm okay with the power. Yes, I wish the DMC could beat a F60 or Diablo... but for the price its good. If I had the $$$, I'd buy the Ultima GTR ($80k). It can keep up with the McLaren F1. Now that is fast!!!

Cupholders are really new...I think the 1986 Ford Taurus was the first car to have them. Even my 1991 Escort (1996 Escorts are the same) just has primitive cupholders that are just single-sized (non-adjustable) and really shallow.

DMC12
07-11-2002, 04:25 PM
I just remembered that my mother's 1984 Plymouth Voyager had cupholders, but they were basically circles on a flat plastic shelf. Hey wait a minute... the old '77 Mercedes I owned had the same kind of thing, but they were in the door of the glove compartment. Basically you could put a cup of tea in there while the car was parked :(

From strictly a reliability standpoint, they're junk. I know, I own one.

The problem is removing the emotional attachment many owners have, the majority of who seem to be youngsters who crave the attention.
The car's looks may be distinct and thanks to Lotus it handles decently, but its a piece of crap otherwise. Poorly built, high maintenence, gutless, an electrical nightmare, I could go on and on. One must love it to own it and thats the problem. Remove this bias and its a piece of junk compared to many other cars of its era.

Pour money into it becomes reliable enough (barely), but the design
and build quality as it came from the factory is atrocious. It's a cult car, plain and simple, appealing to emotions. As a decent daily driver or a performance vehicle, it's a joke.

It is fun to drive though but that comes from ego, not good car design.

Hey duat! Good to see your $0.02 here:)

Everything is relative.

With my first DMC, I followed the trend of keeping the car "concours". This led to a hate of the car. Things that needed improvement had to be replaced with the same flawed parts, and keeping it original to please others was just plain stupid.

With my current D, I just do whatever I want. I am so much happier, and since the total $$$ put into the car is less than the cost of a new Kia, I am even more happy:D :jump:

Let me put it this way:

my DMC= $3,000
Diablo= $200,000

Both offer me the same amount of fun, and I just saved myself $197,000. Pretty damn cool if you ask me!

CHEEP GOOD!
DIABLO BAD!

DMC12
07-25-2002, 03:11 PM
What it boils down to is this:

The DMC is just as reliable as a Lambo from what I hear. I just bought a new Chevy for $30K, and even that needs servicing... so I'm left to wonder if anything is really reliable. Even Hondas break down! So why not save all the $$$ you can? Liquid assets are much more important than depreciating liabilities. I cringe when I hear "I invested $____ in my ride!". Cars are not investments. They depreciate, and tie up your money. If you need to liquidate your car fast, it is worth about half of what you think it is! Your bank account, on the other hand, is the best thing to "invest" in. If you need to cover an emergency or start a new company, then just withdraw the $$$. If you own a Diablo or '03 Cobra, what can you do? Take out a mortgage on the car? NO :( Buy an Old & Busted DMC and have fun with it! Get rid of any car that requires you to tie up your cash. And most importantly: :bonghitte

How dare you compare that poseur sports car to a real sports car,
that delorean is so cheesy they could not even make the whole unibody out of stainless steel, its fiberglass with stainless steel on top, that's like sticking aluminum foil on the body panels of a corvette and stating that the car is alluminum. If you ask me that delorean is just a chevette with a restyled body!

Well, if you want a car with a 100% stainless steel unibody that's fine with me, but I'd rather not have something that weighs 5000 lbs

WTF is wrong with fibreglass...it's light, it's strong, and it won't rust. Why do you think Lotus uses it?

Also, true, the DMC by far doesn't match the Diablo for performance or exculsivity, but it will usually attract close to the same attention, and with the $197,000 you save you can make a DMC into one hell of a sports car.

Now if you don't like Deloreans, fine, but don't come in here and start bashing the cars and people's choice to buy the car.

SuPeRcAr_MaN
02-10-2003, 03:22 PM
Deloreans are one of the top 10 greatest cars on my list. However, I would never compare one to a Lamborghini. The DeLorean is in pretty much it's own league, and IMO, leads the pack of 80's sports cars. Another good thing is the designer, John DeLorean, the same guy that deisgned my car. He knows what he's doing. :D

Once again, dirk-diggler demonstrates his never-ending vault of vast knowledge and technical know-how:p  Say hi to RedNeck for me, OK? :flipa:

The glass-reinforced composite "frame" is better than metal. It will never rust, is repairable with a frame alignment jig & welder and even weighs less than steel. Nowhere has it ever been claimed that the DMC is constructed entirely out of stainless.

Now I suggest you come back when you have something worth posting. Flaming will not be tolerated... I know you've been warned about this issue before:mad:

How come you can compare a DeLorean to a Lambo but you cant compare a Chevette to a DeLorean? They don't look IDENTICAL but the DeLorean has some similar cues to the Chevette, I had a Chevette for my first car years ago and I have the shape of the car memorized from all the times I washed it, and if I just had two very large and powerful magnets I could stretch the chevette and then get a really fat woman to lay down on it's roof, it would look just like a DeLorean, am I right?:D
except it would get all rusty. Gee I hope I am not flaming anyone with this Idea, and I apologize in advance if I am, really, I don't mean any harm, I mean it's just a car! ok? I think the Delorean was a great car, when they first started coming out I was like WOW! a stainless steel car!! no more rust repairs to the chevette, I'm getting one of those! and then I saw it and I was just let down because I thought it was 100% stainless steel, you know all the ads for the car said "the first stainless steel car!" and you know, I just went down to the dealer and I was like expecting so much, that when I found out it wasn't 100% stainless steel well, I was just shocked and really let down. But I do like the car! ok?

The DeLorean doesnt weigh 5000lbs. It weighs the same as a 3rd gen RX7.

It doent have a million horsepower, but it gets around and it looks cool.
The PRV motors did have some problems but if you want to nitpick and I can name LOTS of motors people call junk and others have no problems, or very few problems with.

Im not sure where you're finding $3000 DeLoreans.

I can find a $3000 ferrari too, in a junkyard without a motor.

NADA classicar bluebook on a DMC-12 with low miles, good driving condition and good VIN is 28-32 thousand dollars. And believe or not there are fine examples out there that are still pretty much original.

People sell junkyard cars and wheel and deal on ebay and it makes the good examples of these cars look bad.

I saw a Astin Martin On Ebay the other day for $12K,but the reserve wasnt met...so this must mean that all Astins are worth 12K because I saw it there.

UGGH.

I think DeLoreans are totally awesome, the whole concept is so original.
They atract more attention than a supercar. I was riding with a bunch of my buddies once, we saw one passing us going the other direction. We turned around and followed him for five miles, the guy stopped at a shopping center and we stopped too just to gawk at it. The guy woul not let us touch it though, because he said that fingerprint stains are hard to get out.
Hey I have one, and it fits in a dime-bag, ...no that's mean I was just kidding. :p

I like everything about those cars except that plastic part in front, where the lights screw in. I guess they made it like that so it would be cheaper to fix if a fender bender occured? You guys should get some custom hot rod builder to fabricate you a stainless steel nose, then it would be perfect.
