1994 19TDi, Fuel Gauge,Rev counter,Glow plug light all not working?

I have just bought the car and need advice on how to fix this Dashboard problem. Is their one component that controls all these instruments that could have failed. I will check the fuses first!
Also how does the dashboard come apart? Where are all the hidden screws and does the airbag wheel have to come off first?
Will the speedo cable break as I pull the instruments?

Instrument clusters in North American cars come out fairly simply, w/o removing the steering wheel. I've had several with similar problems. Usually you can bang on the top of the dash and several things will start working or lights will flash. The problem is with the electrical connector to the cluster. I have had no success with cleaning or tightening this connector, in fact the only solution I've seen is a screw inserted between the connector & housing to place enough tension on the small wire contacts to keep them connected.
