Jacque “peacekeeping” Chirac has again displayed a great amount of his political correctness. It seem that nowadays countries are ready to do anything to get their hand on other country resources. Bush did it by force (please don’t tell me it was to save the Iraqis), Chirac do it peacefully. One quick the dictator, the other kiss the dictator, at the end of the day it’s only a question of who will get the biggest and juicier piece of the cake. He‘s already tried this method during the Iraq crisis but GWB was the quickest. (What? Did you really think it was for peace? We just didn’t wanted to have to fight against our own weapons)
I don’t see any problem in tightening our relations with china as long as we bring along the idea of true democracy and freedom. They really lowered themselves to the bottom to please their guest. Worst of all, they invited him at our National Assembly which, irony of the situation, wrote our human and citizen right declaration the 26 august 1789.
If you cannot fight it, make it your friend, but I think that Mr Chirac apply this principle a bit much to the extreme. Beware Mr kadafy, Kim Jon-Il and other Bagbo, this time we mean it and you'll gonna receive your invitation soon.

I don't see the problem with Hu going to France. Il and the rest are a different matter. The moral equivelences you are trying to make are weak.

Good point Yogs.

Good luck to any fuckwit who decides to declare war on China, too.

kadafy, Kim Jon-Il and Bagbo are worse than Hu Jintao. Of course, I feel quite sad to see how the president of China was welcomed in France this month. He's a dictator, etc. etc.
But frankly, if we don't do it, who will do it ? We don't have any power on their decisions in their own country. And if we want to enter more this enormous country, we've to be friendly with Chinese. We could have an huge market with the TGV ("high speed train" : 300kmh). Big French companies as Danone, L'Oréal, Peugeot-Citroën, Alcatel, Alstom, Bouygues, Total, Dassault, Airbus (euro-EADS) and so many others are quite important today, but they can be much more.
I think, even if that's not a pink-view, that Jacques Chirac did quite well, even if he did maybe much for Hu Jintao.
