Hey . . . new here . . .

My daughter's 86.5 Supra has been acting crazy. It has been stalling at red lights or sometimes when she puts it in gear it dies, or almost dies. And the transmission is acting crazy as well.

It is a non-turbo automatic.

I am suspecting a vacuum leak. I found that where I thought you would adjust the idle speed, that diaphragm is missing a vacuum hose. What is the name of that diaphragm? I have spent about 3 hours on yahoo trying to find this out. And, where does the vacuum hose go that comes from this diaphragm? I was hoping to find something disconnected, but have found nothing.

Any help appreciated.

When in doubt pull the error codes, it helps track down the problem 99% of the time. In this case that part is the Idle decel dampener (can't remeber the exact name but that's what it does). All it does is slow the throttle plate from snapping completely shut on the last 1/4" of rotation, it's just a little 1" hose with a filter attached to the end, on the buffer/dampener on the throttle brackets. As for the idle screws, don't mess with them, if it idled right from the factory and it hasn't been adjusted before (still has the yellow paint over the threads) then your ISC valve or TPS is to blame. By the way can you get a pic of this part your talking about, just to make sure it's the same one.

Is the 1986.5 a Mkii or mkiii? I mean, how much difference between the 1986 and the 1986.5?

ALOT of differance, engine, chassis, pretty much everything, but yea you got it, 86 is the MKII and 86.5 is the MKIII.

Well, I was driving home from work several months ago, my son was with me. I said, "That looks like your sister on the side of the road" jokingly. Well, it was her. Something was knocking terribly.

It's been sitting while she raised finances for a rebuild (I have to "match funds" with her). She should finally get it back early part of next week. She can't wait and I can't either . . . she's driving us crazy around here.

Hopefully it will be the car (and more) she remembered. It sure is a beautiful car.

Ouch rod-knock, sorry to hear about that. :( If money is really tight you might want to look into importing a JDM engine, it will definetly be cheaper than rebuilding. A full rebuild will be the better choice for the long run though, it should last much longer if it the maintanence is kept up right. Good luck with it, if you need any help we are here. :biggrin:

She's doing the full engine rebuild. A friend's mechanic said he'd do it for $1500. I hope he knew what he was getting in to. He said he had to replace the flywheel also. On an automatic I thought you only had a ring gear for the starter.

Anyway, I'm just hoping the transmission and all other parts are in good shape.

If yopu haven't fixed the porblem yet or for anyone else, that might be having this problem. I had a differnt car, it would run fine then stall when stopping or accelorating, and would then have a hard time starting again. it seemed to be a fuel delivery problem, so after replacing the fuel pump, filter, and checking the fuel injectors, it still wasn't running. after being stumped I took it to a garage, the problem turned out to be the distributer.

Well, for a follow-up . . . She did get the full engine rebuild, and the mechanic held the price at $1500 plus the cost of the flywheel.

He also took about three months to do it!!! Not to mention that her high pressure side power steering hose had a leak. This was leaking before the rebuild. I took the car to a friend who is a mechanic. He looked at it and stated that where that hose was you'd about have to pull the engine to change it. So . . . I told the mechanic that while the engine was out to please replace the hose. When we picked the car up he related that the hose was just loose at the connection. I couldn't believe it! but you figure he had a full view of everything! So we drive the car home, only to find it "bleeding all over the place!" . . . power steering fluid!!!

But the engine is purring and she's back to enjoying her freedom. She wants to get a '94 Supra. All I can say is "Why take a chance? you know what you've got here . . . "

You didn't put power steering fluid into it did you? The cap says ATF dextron fluid only. Also you might be able to just lift the engine up a few inches to get to the PS hose, and not have to undo many other harnesses or hoses. Agreed on the MKIV though, you don't know what you're going to get with a new car, could be worse than what she has now. You can't change what she likes though, and if she doesn't like the car she probably won't treat it right. Good luck with it though.
