SR Front Skid Mod

Here's a mod I'm trying on my front skid plate from Skid Row. While at Moab I bent back or ground down the 3 lower screws and decided to try and create some protection in front of them. I don't know if this will be the perfect solution, but I thought I would post it. I might grind down the sharp rear edge a bit to minimize catching on it when in reverse, but for the most part I'm going forward when I catch the bolts.

Thinkin out loud here...
Is there such a thing as a carriage type bolt head (rounded and low profile) with an allen wrench center?

Schlud, That is what I had in mind also. Mine will add a bit of a horseshoe effect to it.

The horseshoe or anything that would go across the bend would have cost me more $$$. It's the straight on hits that took out my bolts, but I'll look forward to seeing your version.

There is, I too think that would be the best solution. I assume it is the 2 front bolts you were catching?....

Yes, but don't forget the locking washer, and a larger washer that go underneath the bolt head. That gives you a flat edge again that can be hit and bent back. Also if the allen-hole gets closed by damage you'll have an even harder time getting the bolt off.

Xlax it's the lower 3 bolts that get hit. The front 2 are up high.

Schlud? How much did it cost to get those three pieces welded on? I want to know if my welder is charging a fair price.

Any worries about getting hung up on those lips if you were to be pulled from behind?

Yes, look for a Button Head Cap Screw. They may be hard to find in large sizes though.

Seems like a minor chance. It's hard to tell from the un-installed photo, but they hang down just enough to protect the bolts. Most of my bolt damage has been driving under speed, not being pulled slowly across an obstacle.

I tried that. Hard to remove when they get 'smeared'.
(I used a Dremel cut-off wheel to create a screwdriver slot.)
