Steering Thump in '01 Z71

As of Friday I am the proud owner of a new-to-me '01 Silverado 4x4. She is an absolute beauty but now that I have driven her some more I notice a strange clunk in my steering. The steering is smooth without resistance but when I do turn I feel a clunk (for lack of a better word) coming through the steering wheel. Anyone have an idea what this might be?
I have 6k miles and 6 months left on the factory warranty but I wanted to see if any of you had experienced this and what it might be before I take it to the dealer. Thanks

there is a bulletin from gm stating you have to replace the steering shaft under the dash if you call a dealer they will tell you. i had my truck for over a year it was annoying but i wouldnt bother changing it if it doesnt bother you

Thanks for responding Fox. I'm curious, if I still have warranty coverage, why wouldn't I? Is there potential to do more harm than good by having it replaced? Thanks

it wouldnt hurt to keep it as is but if you have a warranty i would bother them to replace it.
its not a recall its just a bulletin but if you go to a good dealership they might replace it for free.
i would give it a shot

I had the same problem with my 99 Z71 1/2 ton. There is a service bulletin that calls for "Intermediate steering shaft replacement". I had it done in August 2000, under warranty, but problem came back 18 months later.Truck was out of warranty by then. I have been driving with the thump ever since. The part number is 26085548. Dealer price is $127.86 for the shaft. Hope this helps.
