You can replace the syncros. CRS inc. has the parts available(check the FAQ at www.3si.org for information)

3rd is the hardest to do as that gear is in the middle of the set. Check out vr4-stealth.com for a syncro replacment guide.

whats the best way to deal with this issue, now its both my 2nd and 3rd gear grinding, i don't know how to work on cars so i have to pay someone, i found a used tranny for $1,700 with 37,000 miles on it
it sucks when all you have is 600 dollars and won't be able to have $1,700 for at least 2 months. rebuild they say is gonna be $2,500.
DAMN!

check out kormaxtrans.com they sell reconditioned transmissions for $1700.

AS a stop gap are you using a synthetic transmission fluid? If not try one. If you are try BG Syncroshift(I think gm dealers have it) its not cheap but, Its supposed to be good.

yeah more and more peple are saying that it might be as simple as the trans fluid, so i'm gonna check that out and see what happens.
other wise it will be 2 months before i can drive my car, dang man and i was just about to buy the super afc2 and the rev speed meter and or light flywheel. :banghead:
and that kormaxtrans.com isnt working

just double clutch when you drive, it will get you by until you can afford to replace it.

My 2nd gear synchro has been bad for quite a while now. If you just be gentle and take your time before putting it into gear you'll be fine for a while. the web site is kormextrans.com not kormaxtrans.com by the way

Just skip shift. The easy way not to mess anymore things up. If u keep grinding you can mess up forks and your gear. Those are more expensive than syncros. From second just go to 4th. It's not that bad i had to do it for awhile.

well, i have have a bad 2nd and 5th... and reverse.. it grinds when i put it into gear but how do you know that it's the syncros and what is a syncro?

aznnutty...Synchros are the most common problem, so if its grinding...its 99% probably the synchros.
Essentially, they are the parts that allow a gear to connect before the teeth of the gear do, it makes shifting smoother and eliminates grinding that would occur when 2 gear wheels come into contact at differing speeds. Basically when your engine is spinning at a different speed then the gear you are shifting into would be.
Read http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission.htm
to get a better idea of how it all works together.

youngvr4, double clutching is as follows:
when downshifting you put the most stress on your synchros, say you downshift from 3rd to 2nd, notice how your rpms shoot up. thats because the engine has to spin faster in 2nd gear, due to the difference in gear ratio, as it does in 3rd...at the same speed. So say you are driving 40, engine is probably spinning 1000rpms faster in 2nd then in it would in 3rd to maintain 40mph.

Well, when you go to downshift, lets say 3rd to 2nd. Rather then just engaging the clutch and jamming it into 2nd, double shift:
1. push in clutch and take it out of 2nd
2. release clutch
3. rev gas for a split 2nd, a bit higher in rpms than it would normally spike to
4. let off gas
5. push in clutch and put into 2nd gear.
Essentially, when you raised the rpms, if you did this fast enough, you put it into 2nd as the rpms were lowering to about the same level as they would have jumped to. The engine is now speeding at the right speed, before you put it in gear, so there is less stress on the synchros and you don't have that lurch when you downshift.
With practice you can do this damn fast.

Also, to agree with alan, synchromesh is good stuff, so is redline synthetic. I found synchromesh for aroun 8 dollars a qt at pepboys and 5 dollars a qt at autozone...changing the fluid in the rear, transaxle, and transfer case really makes a noticeable improvement in shifting.

during double clutching, is it necessary to release the clutch pedal or would it be alright to push the clutch in and rev the engine without actually letting the clutch out?

Igovert500

You should let the clutch out to do it properly.

93PearlVR-4
05-06-2004, 03:52 PM
ok...that's what I normally do but I was just wondering if it was necessary or not.

i just give the gears a socond or two and then shift in softly, works everytime and never grinds
