Revell Hummer H1 *progress*

OK, so we all know Revell Hummer H1 is a terrible kit, snap tite, poorly molded and the whopping 20 pieces in the kit which makes it kinda of simple to say the list.
I am going to modify it as a off-roader and try to make it as realistic as possible... mostly because its the only Revell kit on the market :p
Ok so on with the progress.. this is the lovely kit... did I mention that the body is molded in RED plastic?? :grinno:
http://www.joeyandmona.com/albums/album32/1_G.sized.jpg
Here are some scratch built items... some extra PIAA off road lights for the front brush guard. a new winch with actual jewelers chain, new gas caps (these are going to be screw on/offs) side view mirros, top nerf bar and side steps.
http://www.joeyandmona.com/albums/album32/2_G.sized.jpg
Close up of the new exhaust stack, lights and scratchbuilt winch:
http://www.joeyandmona.com/albums/album32/3_G.sized.jpg
This is the lovely and very red body with holes opened for fuel caps, step bar attachments and mirrors:
http://www.joeyandmona.com/albums/album32/4_G.sized.jpg
http://www.joeyandmona.com/albums/album32/5_G.sized.jpg
Bits and pieces test fitted on to the body:
http://www.joeyandmona.com/albums/album32/6_G.sized.jpg
http://www.joeyandmona.com/albums/album32/7_G.sized.jpg
I am going to be looking into the option of opening a door or two... perhaps a few more surprises :uhoh:
How about it so far?? come on help me out with some ideas...

Looks good so far, your winch is awsome!, but my suggestion would be to pull the side steps (nerf bars) up closer to the vehicle, they look a little to low IMO, nice stuff so far though

You went from the very sleek and aero Toyo to this brick! :lol2:
Looks like a neat project, the mods you have going are cool. This is one of those models that you have to attack with the proper attitude, and you did. You looked at the kit and saw it's potential rather than it's limitations.
Realistic finishes will be what makes this model work and you proved to have all the necessary skills. :iceslolan

Thanks for the support everyone. The level of detail on the castings is quite soft so I would like to do a non complicated single color scheme so that whatever details there are would not get lost in the paint.
I am thinking of light gunmetal with flat black canvas top and black interior.... light gunmetal goes on easy and has great coverage, so I think I will stick with it... wish me luck.

Looks like you got your work cut out for you! But it should be great. It seems to be coming along well, so far at least. I agree about the side steps, they are too low and too far out for an off-roader. Even if they go no further down than the chassis or axles, keep in mind when off road there isn't a nice paved shoulder, and those things could get rather nastily torn off. Personally, I would go without, but for the sake of realism you might want to reign them in a little. Otherwise, you've got something great coming and I can't wait to see it. I'd love to see opened doors, and any thoughts on opening the grills in front of and on top of the hood? Do a little engine detail and you'll have a beaut. Are you going to make a snorkel to go with that exhaust stack? Wee, talk about a fun project, a good chance to let your hair down! So to speak.

I'd go with a dark green or even black for the body. I think the green is the best choice :D

Updates time. I opened up the grill openings and opened up the headlights (going to change these to the option off road lights) sprayed my first primer coat and this is what it looked like :grinno:
http://www.joeyandmona.com/albums/album13/1_G_001.sized.jpg
see the mold lines?? so out came the sanding sticks and another shot of primer to smooth everything out... then I applied the first coat of paint (plati-coat Hummer H1 Sunset pearl) original Hummer paint... I think it looks very nice:

The great thing about Plasticaot paint is that the coverage is excellent! Thanks to Antonio for all the tips of using Plasti-Coat type of paints. The bad thing is that the paint goes on dull... you can see that the paint is dull and lack luster..
So Tamiya clear fixes that problem:

Nah do the roof tan, and I reckon you need bigger tires and lifted suspension :sunglasse
Did you just spray the Tamiya clear on likea normal can of paint and it came out that smooth? I've heard taht Testors high gloss is excellent for clear coating.

I spray Tamiya clear with good results. I have tried Testors gloss and it works equally good I think, but the faster drying tyime of Tamiya makes me use their gloss more often.
Both are real nice. I would like to try PPG clear flow paint but I have not yet been able to source a spray can of it... May be I will try some automotive stores later.

more progress time, I guess there are a few people still following along. Finished the front brush guard. Added two PIAA spot lights, a scratbuild winch, a scratch built tow hook and straps.
began working on emblems and lights as well.. keep in mind this kit is very very simple, all the lights are molded in... also grilled had been opened up and metal mesh inserted:

Decided roof colour yet? What is your interior like at the moment?
Awesome details with the windscreen grime, but I still vote for bigger tires and a lift kit

If you mean the front brush guard, then yes, it comes with a very basic simplified version. I added structurural beams, support for PIAA lights and new scratchbuild winch.
If you mean an actual interior roll bar, then NO. This kit does not come with it. The entire interior is no more than 5 pieces, so everything other than seats and basic dashboard has been scratchbuild.
Please understand that aside from the unique subject matter and a semi-decent body, this kit is complete garbage.. it is an oversimplified hunk of plastic. all together this kit has 38 pieces.. including tires and windows...
believe me when I tell you that the worst Fujimi kit is a gem compare to this thing...but I am trying to do my best with it :cwm27:
