Hey,
I have a 2001 3.8 V6 convertible Stang, and was wondering if adding a supercharger would be smart. If so what other mods would I have to make to get the best out of the charger. Right now it's just an all stock Mustang. thanx for your input

First of all, buy a v8. 2nd, you need low compression, around 8:1. As for the res I dunno, I'm kinda a fan of n/a. In my opinion, you shouldnt make a motor bad with a supercharger, make it bad and then supercharge it :) .

I agree with 351wstang. If you dont want to engine swap then I would suggest just doing some small mods first then going supercharger.

2 ways to get more out of a motor get more air in and more exhuast out. With a S/C you are forcing air in, you could help your S/C out by buying a better flowing intake/heads etc.., but it'a V-6, so not too much available. So concentrate on the second part more. You have a ton of extra exhuast gas now that you a forcning extra air in by the S/C. Get it out with a free flowing exhuast, headers back. This applies for N/A but the gotten gains will be greater when FI.

8:1, I don't think so, Tim :nono: You would only need to to 8:1, if you boosting well over 1 bar.

I am not familiar with the V6, what comp ratio does it have? I am boosting at 12psi, on a 9.5 to 1, but of course I have aluminum heads. If the V6 has iron heads, and you are running 9.5 to 1, I would not boost more than 7psi.

Actually "theoretically" all things being equal a set of cast iron heads will create more hp in a FI situation than a set of aluminium heads. In other words two sets of heads comlpetely identitical except one made of aluminum the other cast iron. The cast iron heads are better choice for a FI motor.

To a point, iron are more appt for detonation because it will not dissapate the heat as well. Its all about keeping the det at bay.

My point was, that if the V6 had a fairly high comp, you can boost more with the aluminums.

But, that is true GTStang:)

i would say, dont' waste your time on a V6, wait until you have money and drop a 4.6 in. bore and stroke it, even, with forged internals. then you can basically run as much boost as you want, as long as you have the proper fuel delivery system. best of luck =)

Not really off track, just a slight detour.

V6 with a super can get some very respectable power out. Not everyone wants to be king of the street, they just want a little more power, to make their car a little bit more friendly to drive.

It really comes down to what mustangBeasT wants out his car.

A well tuned and modded V6 can easily be in the 12's with the help of a S/C, gears, duel exhaust and such. If he's set on keeping the V6 then I say go this route.

Thanks alot guys. You've been really helpfull. I'm thinking I should first start with a dual exhaust system, then go from there. Any recommendations? Oh yeah what do you mean by 8:1 or 9.5:1? I'm kinda new at this

8:1 and 9.5:1 are compression ratios. You do understand that, right? When the piston starts to compress (bottom of the compression stroke) the air and fuel. It will travel to the top of the block, right. Well depending on how far the piston travels to squeeze the air/fuel mixture up to the top of the head, you get compression. This is not a set standard, it will vary from engine to engine. Depending on volume, stroke, chamber size, cam events, and boost level.

Does that make sense? I have had a couple of drinks tonight.

I thought every1 knew suck squeeze bang blow... But yes like Skyline said, The 2nd stroke is the compression stroke. This stroke "compresses" the A/F mixture for a more complete and explosive burn.

With the newer cars and emission laws vary from state to state, dropping in a V-8 isn't as smart as it use to be. Althought the 6 will always be less than the 8 they are a lot more viable than the old 4-cylinder motors. It's smarter with a 96+ Mustang to just go buy a V8 Stang than swap for the time being.
