Have a 6cyl 4.3 s10 which runs great....except a couple times now if I leave it outside for a few hours in the cold (like -25c) when I goto start it I get nothing. All the interior lights come on but the truck doesnt even try to start...it just bings at me with the service engine light on...if I keep trying after about a minute it'll just start and give me no more trouble. Obviously not the battery...could say it was the cold but it didn't even attempt to start and then out of nowhere it starts like it never had a problem. Any ideas would be great thanks.

Check all your battery connections first, make sure they are connected tightly, especially the one for your starter, have you replaced your started or is it OE? Your starter solenoid may be going bad.
Good way to tell this is you got power and you get no response then you keep tring and evetually you get started, as you said already, this is an indicator that the starter solenoid is going bad.

Thanks for the response...I figure it would have to be with the starter...would the solenoid be affected by the cold if its going bad?

Not really, thing is if there is no clicking sound when you try to start it then its the solenoid. If there is a click then its just the gears inside the starter. They just go bad kinda like a battery, one day it works the next it wont. Hope this helped man.

Actually it just happened again tonight and I noticed there is a click when I turn the key and if I turn the key slowly over and over it'll start up...starter it is. I appreciate all your replies, they've been a big help.
