low oil level light always on

I have a 1995 CHevy Beretta Z26 with a 3100 in it. Just recently the "low oil level light" has come one and stayed on. I checked the plug on the oil pan underneath the car and it went off for a little bit then cam back on. I think that the sesor in the pan is shot but I am lookin for a second opinion and if so how would i go about replacing it, cuz it looks like a real pain.

I hate to ask the ovious, but did you check the oil?

The oil sender is not on the bottom of the pan, it is attached to the adapter where the oil filter screws on. It is a snap to change. Check the wires going to it, make sure they look good.

if it is on the adapter then what is the plug that i removed/replaced on the bottom of the oil pan and why did the light go out for a time when i did that??? I am just wonderin not to say that you are wrong or anything.

The only plug I know of on the bottom of the oil pan is the drain plug. When you took it out did a lot of oil run out? Did it have any wires on connecting to it?

alright i dunnno if i am being taken to be the stupidest person in this forum and all i did was ask a question so that i could get some intelligent help. for one, NO it was not the drain plug as i do all of my own work on my cars. for two YES there are wires that go to it and it is on the bottom of the pan and near one corner. I THINK that i might have to pull the oil pan to fix but i wanted to know for sure before i end up doin something that isn't necessary, like if it just gets pushed in / pulled out of the bottom. thank you

Sorry for the advice, Didn't mean to piss you off. I haven't seen a oil pressure sensor in the oil pan. My mistake. I have seen knock sensors and crank sensors there though. Hope you get it fixed. Once again, sorry for not knowing you mechanicle ability.

If I am not mistaken, there is only one bolt that holds this sensor in.
The part was about $21.00 on the NAPA online search (Look it up yourself and you can see a picture of the part and see the bolt flange)

Looks like you drain your oil, unplug the wires,pull the one mounting bolt out, pull out the sensor, slide the new one in (watch the o-ring) put in the bolt, plug it in, dump in some fresh oil and that should be it.. I don't see why you should have to pull the pan or anything. It has been a few years since i looked at one of these, but if i recall that is all there was to it.

the oil sending pressure switch is located next to the oil filter you use a special socket to change it unless you can get a wrench on it but that is unlikely. the sensor in the pan is the oil level light letting you know if the oil level is low. the one in the pan is a tad higher in price but before just buying a part I would hook up a pressure gauge to the oil p.s.i. switch if that looks good then buy the other sensor
