trying to figure out what to do with my future...

Hey fellas, I was wondering whether or not you guys could help me out here.. Anyway, I'm a 2nd semester senior in high school, trying to think about what to do with the rest of my life... My plan was orginally to go to a community college, (since I smoked/drinked my high school carrer away) and then transfer to a 4 year to take up computer engineering...

But, then I discovered Auto Shop... Now it's like, I wanna work on cars, and perhaps own my own shop someday, but now I'm kinda lost.. Like I'm not sure if I wanna keep it as a hobbie, or do it full time, or whether I'll have a job as a computer engineer. So I am debating whether I should go to a techinal school to get my ASE, and maybe do community college on the side so when I get business going, I'll know what to do, or just go through with the original plan.. Any thing you guys got would be helpful... thx.

Don't put too much thought into it yet. Get to college, and start taking all the basic classes, with maybe one or two involved with the major you want to start out. That way by the time your first year is over, you have an idea if you want to stay in your desired major or make a switch. I'm still in college and before I even got there everyone(adults) were telling me that they still don't know what they want to do. And I didn't quite understand it, but I do now. Try and do something you have an interest in and go from there.

I'd say go to the community college first and start taking important classes that will make it possible to transfer to the 4 year college. While you do that, get a part time job at an automotive shop and work on cars as if needed the money to survive. Working on cars for a living is a lot different than working on them as a hobby. Even though I work on Mercedes and they are fun to drive and stuff, the actual work that I am expected to do is not what you would call fun. I now have no desire to work on my Jeep at home and I am going to sell it in order to buy a daily driver. Don't get me wrong, I do like my job and I like working on the cars, but, it's not what I expected when I realized that I loved working on my Jeep as a hobby. Just give it some time. Going to school and working on cars part time will hopefully give you an idea of what you want to do for the rest of your life.

yeah, as long as you realize that working on cars for a job means that you'll be changing the oil, blah blah, fixing what's broken, and not much else. i'm in school learning to do just that. So far so good, but things always change.

a business degree is something very versatile that can be used, so say you start out in a shop that you own working on cars you and a coupe of partners then after it gets going you can movve more say into the managing, or advertising, or sales of the lil business you have going. that way your not working on cars all the time. but your still doing something related to them just my thoughts

But you don't need a business degree to open a shop ;)

I personallly couldn't stand taking business classes, i think its outta the question for me.

That's true, but if you don't know how to run your business well then it wont last more than a year, if that. I suggest taking the basic classes, and then try to figure out a major sometime in your freshman year in college. Just dont try to figure out everything right now...it never works out.

Good luck.

Don't bother with computers, you probably will not find a job after graduating anyway.

That's why you hire other people to do the business part for ya, while you do the labor part ;)

I already have a major: Automotive Technology.. I figured that's what i wanted to do after (edit: actually, i figured it's what i wanted to do BEFORE i dropped) i dropped out of my old school (old major: Mechanical engineering)

i drank and smoked my highscool years away also and my secand semester of senior year i had two classes english and autotech, i started to love cars and to modify them, then i graduated(barly) and started working for a preformance shop and saw cars and hot rods you name it, after about a year i had a car that looked and drove like it was on steriods and was so completly numb and bored with cars and making them cool and fast i am a secand away from selling my car to buy a jeep wrangler and say the hell with car modification. i drank worked and slept it for a year and now i just dont give a rats ass about any of it.

Basically, dont get into the automotive field it sucks, keep it as a hobbie, get fucked up on smoke and drinks, get laid, and go to college. some people (like me) would love to have the chance to go back and slap myself in the face and say "GO TO SCHOOL YOU DUMB ASS"
wont get that chance to go to school, dont mess up a good oppertunity :)

Im YOU a couple years later. I love cars but don't want to get stuck working on '82 buick regal's my whole life. I want to build cool cars. but thats not just going to happen. So I went to a technical school for 2 years and got an associates degree in Network Engineering. I basically went for the money in the IT fields.... nope, Im broke, live at home at 25, and work on a help desk doing tech support for the cable company. the job market is flooded with IT professionals, BEWARE.

I wish I had an answer to your question but I dont. there are guys on this forum with Ferrari's and GTR's and you name it. I wish some of them had time to tell us broke normal people what the hell they did (if anything, for all you *trust fund* spoiled heaven on earth people out there) to make it. fact is, invent the next wheel, or work your ass off at a masters degree and BEG a company to give you a decent paycheck. or go in the medical field, there's always money there. None of it is an answer to your problem if your like me. I DONT want to be a doctor, even if it does get me in a $100,000 car. its not ME. I did some research on a business degree but I've heard (don't quote me, I'd really like more input on this) that this market is flooded as well.

Any wealthy people wanna clue us in here????

that is probably the single most useful thread i have read in my entire life... I have decided to go into the car field, then follow that up with another degree for business, (so I can eventually own my own shop,) but my next question is this: My shop teacher told me about a cool program that would allow a dealership to sponsor me, and I would work on their cars and go to school, but the problem is, is that I would be accustomed to fixing only that manufactuer. The other option is that I have my mom put me through techinal school, and I would get an all around education, but she would have to pay for it, and I'm not guarenteed a job as I would for the dealer, as I would love to be sponsored by say---ford, or gm.. but if say someone comes in with a toyota or even a Bmw, i might be lost..
Help?

.... cars keep testing me, whether or not i should be a mechanic, my 2nd car in a year just broke down, it's then middle of the night, and raining... what the hell? Maybe it's a sign, i go to school, so if this were to happen, i can always fix it... damn auto shop cars.... I dunno, i had a big oil spill accident today, I ruined some cam bolts on monday, and well, I dunno.. Maybe I'm just trying to do too much, too fast.
