Electric Fans

I've been wanting to put an electric fan on my 97 K1500 5.7L, (i.e. flex-a-lite), but I can't really afford the $400 that I've seen them advertised for. Anybody found anything any cheaper, or are there any decent substitutions for the flex-a-lite? :naughty: Oh, by the way, today I installed a helix tb spacer and I did the air box mod while I had it all apart and I noticed a very nice increase in acceleration in the 2500 to 4000 rpm range. The spacer turned out to be a pretty worthwhile mod for my high-mileage truck!! :grinno:

Look for some electric fans out of a lt1 or ls1 camaro, transam, firebird, or corvette. You can usually get a set with the shroud for around $100-120. Then buy a control unit from flexalite. These things flow air great(they have to flow good to cool the sports car motors). This is going to be my next mod, but I'm waiting until I get my underdrive pullies so I can do it all at one time. I have a website for you to look at if you are interested in doing this mod. It tells you how to install them, how to hook them up, and shows pictures of everything. Just let me know if you'e interested in seeing it.

Yeah, I'm interested! Is it the sshotrods website? they have a pretty good article about how to install the flexalite fans. I saw a fan on JCWhitney's website for pretty good price, but it is just a single fan - would 1 fan be enough to cool it down under normal driving conditions??

i bought the flex-a-light universal fans for $230. im not sure what size they are but i know their not 15inbut i do know their not smaller then 12in. they came with all the wiring. and i installed them in about and hour and the was taking my time. they have no problem cooling my truck.

I installed a single large fan and March Power pulleys on a 5.7L '93 Silverado and noticed a difference. I made the brackets for the fan and it took awhile to install but it wasn't real difficult. Plus, of course I removed the stock fan. I also used the Flexalite controller and it worked as advertized. The pulley install was real easy up to the point that I had to make several trips to the auto store to try to find a new belt that would fit. I drove around for about a week and noticed that stopped at a light the air cond got warm. At home in the driveway I let the truck idle for awhile to see what was happening. The water temp steadly climbed and the air cond didn't have enough rpms from the crank to make it work and it finally started to make a terrible screeching noise. I removed the pulleys, reinstalled the fan and left the electric one on for extra cooling. I think that had I bought the big double fans I would have been OK with the cooling. The pulleys just didn't work out at all.

Ladies Man - Where did you find your fans for that price? Did you have to install the 160degree stat in order for them to work right? Or is that just something extra that you wanted to put on there?

Here's the link to the fans install. It isn't the one from sshotrod, this one shows a more detailed install. You would have no trouble with these fans cooling.

i've been seeing some different fans that look like they would work (on flexalite's website) like the black magic, but i might have to make some brackets to get it to mount up corrctly on my truck.

i got my fans from a local perofrmance store called ramchargers and how they turn on and off is they have a thermometer that you put in your radiator hose. and when the thermometer gets hot they turn on and there is different settings i will go take some pictures of them on my truck to help explain.
