I bought a Maxima SE ('04) one month ago. Using only mid-grade fuel (89 octane). But the manual says I can use regular (87 octane). Is it OK to switch to the lower-priced fuel?

If you want to replace O2 sensors, knock sensors and PCV's and Fuel fitlers and so on sooner than you would have to with higher octane, by all means use 87. Also, 87 burns alot quicker than super does, so you aren't really saving that much money when you take into account MPG factor and the effect low grade gas has on regular maintenance items. Just remember in life, "there is no free lunch".

if it's an 04 i'm pretty sure it says it needs 91 octane in the owners manual. i know my 02 does and so did my 95.

Infact, I've never read a manual for any kind of car that didnt say to use premium.
