Tachometer installation

I just installed a tach on my 96 civic dx. When i set it to 4 cyl it reads at like 6,000 rpm idle. What did i do wrong?

maybe you used the wrong wire, it's hard to say without being able to see it.

yea, i had the wires wrong. I just figured out to use the factory tach connection. its a small harness near the driver side strut tower. their should only be two wires coming out toward the firewall and an empty pin location. this is where the factory tach connects on the ex model.
