Can someone give me the engine specs and options that the 87 monte carlo SS had? A friend of mine is looking at one here in a few days and was curious of the options that he might or might not be seeing. Any help is much appreciated, thank you.

EDIT: He would also like to know if you can do an LT1 swap into it, and if so, what it would require.

The 87 and 88 Monte Carlo SS didn't change much from the 84-86 ones. It ended up getting a slightly more smoothed areodynamic body especially in the backend. The back lights were more curved, making them partly "wrap around" the outsides of the car. Also in 87 the car was available in more colors of paint. Along with that it also changed it's decal design slighty. Instead of having a big "SS" infront of the Monte Carlo decal, the big "SS" was now above it. (I might have that backwards) Other than that nothing really big. Some had a POSI rear-end, some did not. Also another thing that changed on them too was the speedometer. They finally took out that piece of crap 85MPH one and put in a 120MPH. I'm getting an 87 SS Monte in the Spring myself. Feel free to PM me with anymore questions you might have and i'll try and help. Enjoy. :)

my cousin had an 87 black monte carlo SS.. They aren't fast at all, but i'm sure theres a lot of parts if not motor swaps you can do to them.. Stock they run anywhere from 15.9-16's... I'd get a GTA, or 5.0 mustang instead.. start off faster and they have a lot more potential... My cousin also owned a 86 GTA which ran 14.8 stock... Even a trans an with the 305 would run mid 15's and have good potential.. plus it's very hard to find a good looking monte SS cause they rust real bad after not too long a period of time... When i was 17 i was interested in them, but all the ones i looked at were run down with 100,000 miles and rust.. i found maybe 2 decent ones with over 50k miles and the owners wanted 8k... Depends how much you like them i guess, but i'm just trying to add my thoughts to help you out..

STOCK the 84-88s did 0-60 in 7.8 seconds. That's damn quick for a car that size @ 180hp. 1/4 miles were 15.9-16.2 @ 86mph. Not that bad either for the weight @ 180hp. They don't rust quick. You could drive them and or any other car whenever and not have it rust. You just have to take care of it like any other car.

Ok we'll make this fair and start with an 84 Mustang. Now of course they came in more then one engine selection, but i'm just going to put up the 302ci (5.0) types for that year. Here we go:

1984 - 165hp

1985 - 210hp (0-60 in 7.1 seconds, 1/4 mile in 15.5 seconds @ 89.7 mph.)

1986 - 210hp

1987 - 225hp (0-60 in 6.7 seconds)

1988 - 225hp

So you can clearly see that these Mustangs weren't that much better performance wise. And they weighed like half the weight and had more HP. Pathetic. But lets go just a little farther....

1989 - 225hp

1990 - 225hp

1991 - 225hp

1992 - 225hp

1993 - 200hp - (Cobra - 235hp)

I'll stop there. I think i've made my point. Don't get me wrong, some Mustangs are really nice and i'm not trying to bad mouth them at all, i'm just saying, power for power and pound for pound the Montes would eat the 5.0 Mustangs. Although anything after like 1993 or so the Mustangs would start to kill the SS's. Around like 96 I think they started to hit like 305hp+ or so. (Might have been 95)

I say, if you want an older "muscle" car and you have the money, get an 87 Buick Grand National GNX. Turbo charged @ 275hp stock. 0-60 in 5.5 seconds. I forgot what it can do for a 1/4 mile time....but it hits about 97.7mph at the finish line. Only an 87 though. Grand Nationals were made from 78-87 but the 87 GNX was the most powerful one, not to mention, last one ever made. :smokin:

Anyone who argues that a 5.0 Mustang sucks compared to a old monte SS is plain retarded... The after market support for mustangs is light years ahead of the monte SS.. And i don't care how big the intakes are cause the motor still makes more horsepower and the car is still faster.. It was just a sujestion.. And whos the moron that got banned? Don't get pissy cause your hearing things you don't want to.. chill people..

Whatever dude, no one ever said that any car sucks. I just showed people the facts. I'm more then fully aware of what i'm talking about.
