so yesterday i called the insurance agency "state farm". well my mom did actually... but for me-a 16 year old male, it would cost me about $1097 every 6 months on an 89 5.0 LX. if i remember correctly this is full coverage. do you guys think that it is really worth it to get a mustang or just find a car that would have less insurance rates. and any suggestions for different cars would be great.

I feel your pain dude. A 16 year old male is going to get skrewed on insurance. I paid even more than that on an 90 Iroc Camaro when I was in high school. Just check around but any sports car is going to be high.

My friends 16 yr old brother is paying like $140 a month and he is driving a 1999 mustang gt. I think he has All state insurance though.

I was in the same situation as you dude. I just bought my 96 GT about a month ago or so. It would have $475 a month for me, because I'm 17. We have insurance from some little place and we only carry liability, if you only carry liability then the car you drive doesnt matter it just depends on the driver. So when I changed driving from my 95 Lebaron to my mustang GT my insurance didnt change at all.

I'm a lot older than you and a female. But, when I was 19 I had a Iroc and All State and State Farm wanted to charge me an arm and a leg. I actually found a small insurance company that insured me for about $1,700 a year. You may want to see if you could just be added as a driver to the car under your parent's insurance. However, this may not be an option if there are already 2 cars in the household. If so, then the insurance company would automatically list you as a full time driver and sky rocket the rates. Be prepared to deal with high insurance til you're 25 or til you get married.

well after talkin to my mom she said the insurance would drop to 899/6months if i can somehow mange to get a B average in school. then i can take a test on a video about safety and have it drop even more, and on top of all that i get 10% off for drivers ed. so as hard as its going to be im gonna try and keep my damn grades up :\

At any rate, your still going to pay out the ass cause of your age. My insurance just went down from $3,200 to $2,800 a year. That's also for 2 cars with full coverage at a step 15, and I'm also 24.

It would have $475 a month for me, because I'm 17
$475 a month, that's $5,700 a year?!?!?! Someone was trying to screw you over!!!!

Ooh we're talking an 85 Iroc that I got in 1987....so now I guess you know my age. There was nothing added to boost speed or anything like that. I just loved that car and had to have it. I sold it 7 years later because I started having problems with it.

I think that is a pretty good rate, especially since you're 16.

man you guys don't know what bad insurance rates are... here in New Brunswick the rates are nuts. like a 89 beater corolla is 1200 a year - for a clean 24 year old.. you don't even pay like 700 for that junk. also a clean 24 year old driving a 00' jetta wagon is 2500.

For me and my mustang - no offcail quotes yet- but were estimating around 6000-7000 a year. i got some serious racing to do if i want to make that kind of cash.. sigh i hate this shit hole..

My insurance for the Grand National and the Ranger is like 103 a month. I pay more for my Ranger under liabialty then I do for the GN with full coverage. I'm 20 years old, clean record, and a B student. I pay 52 a month for the GN

do you guys think that it is really worth it to get a mustang or just find a car that would have less insurance rates. and any suggestions for different cars would be great.

Buicks are the cheapest car in America to insure and BMWs are among the most expensive. However, in Los Angeles the difference in the cost of insurance is marginal. For example, a 2004 Buick Century costs only $20/month less to insure than a 2004 BMW 325i sedan. These two cars are at the extreme ends of the insurance spectrum for 4 door sedans with a 6 cylinder engine. Considering that rent for a 1 bedroom apartment around here averages $1,000/month, $20 is loose change.

The best place to evaluate insurance rates is at,
http://www.progressive.com
They give pretty accurate quotes on their site.

I pay $160 a month for my 90. I was going to get a 99 GT but the insurance said that it would be $700 A MONTH for me to get one (thats full coverage under my name). I make like $450 a month working 20 hours a wek so how is ANYBODY supposed to afford something like that? Jeez.... :screwy:
P.S.- $120(car payment)+$160(insurance)+$80(gas :uhoh: )+$20-$140(fix shit that breaks)= i'm broke and in debt......at 16.

that may be true, but i offten find that the "older" population forget is this:

Being in high school i spend 6+hours in school each day. Now out of 24 hours 6 are in school 8-9(if that sometimes) are spent sleeping, 2 are spent on homework and studying, plus the hour or so spent traveling. so that leaves 7-8 hours to earn money (90% of the time at minium wage) ,fix your car/work on car, have a social life, do ANYTHING else, AND still go driving. So basicly I work as hard as possible, make about 20 times less a year, and have less time to do anything.

Now hows that for being broke?

If your're young and still on your parents insurance policy, see if you can be listed as the main driver for one of your parents cars; that might be cheaper depending on what they drive. My mom did that for my 5.0 and my ins. went from 1200 to 700.

And what ever you do on your own policy or on your parents. Do everyone a favor, if you get a speeding ticket ( we get them from time to time look what you drive) get an attorney and have them fixed. The money its gonna save you down the road is well worth it.

SIKCRX...UTI sucks man. I been going for 8 months now. Reality #1: NO Part Time Automotive Job; Why? you ask? ( Because the comunity hates us, everyone thinks you are a hellraiser that bellongs behind bars if you attend UTI. Reality #2: NO Homework? They may not assign homework but if you dont takes good notes and study then you better have a Photographic memory. There is noway you can pass the electrical classes w/out studying unless you where born with a lightbulb up your a$$. There is no way you can pass A/C unless you manage to stay awake during class. There is no way to pass Fuel % Emissions or Driveability unless you really do study. So ya no assigned homework, but beleave me buddy, there will be plenty of it. I know your recruiter told you all kinds on interesting things. But! unless you wanna go work for some import, choose another school. My recruiter filled me full of good cool shit and made me really wanna go, but if i had it to do all over again, beleave me budy, i wouldnt be here. You may wanna look into Wyotech.

Yep, i drive about 90-100 miles a week. And have to fill the tank up every week. Which is $22. So $22 times 4 is $88. My car gets 9mpg, yep i'm still trying to figure out why. I dont drive like an idoit, hardly ever hold my foot on the floor, dont know what it is. I'll figure it out eventually.

I feel your pain.... I am going through the Think big program for cat, and Im being sponsord by Catipillar Proving Grounds. it's the UTI or wyotec for caterpillar. electrical class is tough. Nothing is assigned. Your not forced to do homework. But if you want to keep your sponsorship you have to study and study hard. For mee to keep my sponsorship Ineed to keep a 3.0 out of a 4.0 minimum to stay in the class.

Not that anyone should do this, but one could pick up a Geo Metro beater for a couple hundred bucks, insure that as thier primary vehicle and the Mustang as the secondary. The saving in premiums would pay back quick-like. I know a guy who was paying $110/month on a '01 Dodge Ram (full coverage). They wanted about $160/month to add the '87 Mustang he got (liability) so he insured the Mustang as the primary. Dropped the entire bill to $90/month even though the Stang sits in the garage all winter. Sometimes you need to be a little creative to get ahead.

Good idea on the geo thing. I pay $61/month for full coverage on my geo convertible. You can have some fun suping it up too. And if you think you can't, check out this video... Suzuki swift, no NOS, running turbo (suzuki swift is a geo metro). It's street legal and smog legal too.

I got a 94 Mustang GT Conv. and my insurance is $267 a month, that's about $1600 every 6 months. I have 1 wreck, 1 speeding ticket and I'm 19.

Also FYI, did you know that on Mustang GT's that convertibles are cheaper on insurance than hardtops?... Don't know why but at least with my insurance it is. Maybe it's because hardtops are more often turned into street rockets than convertibles for the rigidity.

you guys are depressing the crap out of me. I`m 40 and just bought my first 5.0 gt (an 88 5 speed ). I`ve got the wife`s minivan full coverage, my rodeo just enough to keep the piece of crap on the road and my popup camper all insured for $1100.00 a year. Then there`s the old 66 galaxie 500 registered as an antique which runs at $114.00 for the year. Perfect driving record for at least 10 years now.( i can`t believe i haven`t been caught yet!!! ). I can`t wait for spring because i feel that i`m gonna have some fun with this little car. I`m just afraid the speeding tickets will soon follow and in massachusetts we`re on a safe driver step system where one speeding ticket will add a point to your driving record plus a $99.00 insurance surcharge for the next 6 years. In the galaxie it seems the cops look the other way but in a mustang they`re hoping that you`ll punch it. Good luck to you younger guys. All good things come with time.
