Chevy G20 Van A/T shift lever very hard too move when cold

My 1994 Chevy G20 Sportvan A/T shift lever becomes very stiff (to the point I think I will break something) when it is cold outside (32 degrees or less). Where do I start?

I removed the cable at both ends and determined the problem was at the top of the column. The ball and socket was all gunked up. (I later found out the previous owner, my brother, dumped a cup of coffee w/sugar down the column a year ago) A couple shots of WD40 and compressed air and it is good as new!
