HELP!! My 1999 Durango has an issue with the signal lights. The don't blink most of the time. They may blink for a few seconds but then freeze. Is it a relay? I can't seem to find one for this purpose but I am no mechanic.

Hazards are working just fine. Can it be a bad ground? All the bulbs work though.

Can somebody give me some direction (bad pun I know).

Thx - jf

I just tried to turn on the hazard lights while the blinker was frozen and the hazards froze as well - on their own they work fine - I remember reading somewhere that this is a clear indication of a specific problem but I can remember where I say it - does anyone know?

I have been having the same problem. My 2001 durango's turn signals, interior dash lights work intermitantly. I took it to the dealer while it was under warranty and the dealer said the aftermarket hitch voided the electrical warranty. Do you have an aftermarket hitch on your durango? If not, then I will use your problem to go back to the dealer and complain!
Thanks.

No hitch after or before market :)

Complain away - I've avoided the dealer because everytime I go they hit me with someone - I def trust them more than the corner garage but now that we are our of warranty (1999) I rely on these groups to identify the problem when I can - thanks and let me know how it goes.

I had the same problem in my 2000 Durango at about 48k miles. The turn signal might work for 30 seconds, or it might work for 5 seconds and then it would freeze in the on position. It drove me nuts for several months. It would do the same for the hazard lights as well. I did some research and found that it might be the flasher unit. I purchased from the dealer for about $45 and changed it out myself and I haven't had a problem since.

It's a bit tight to get to. It's located on the inside of the dashboard on the driver's side, next to the fuse box. It's a green 1 inch cube.

Sweet - I've been looking for it but had no luck. I assume it was that but since I didn't find it I couldn't check it. Not sure I could even if I did find it.

Ok, have you found the part on-line anywhere? Dealers are usually priced too high.

I found this on allpar.com and thought it was funny - "An electronic flasher operates both turn signals and hazard warning lamps as on Dakota. It simplifies the vehicle and enhances reliability by replacing two electro-mechanical flashers with a single, inherently more reliable, electronic device."

Not for some of us. :)

Here's another string I found on a different site - not very helpful but def another source to ask

Let me know about the part. Thanks!

I did not think to try and buy it off of the internet. After dealing with it not working for 2 or 3 months, I felt that $45 was rather cheap if I could have my sanity back. I called around to the local auto part stores and no one carried it. I hate having to pay the dealer for anything, but in this case I think it was worth it.

Let me know if you find anywhere on the internet to get it. Never know, I may have to replace it again at 100k miles.

good point - Ill call the dealer this week - thanks - I saw another string where someone said I need to remove the steering column cover - is this the case - you seemed to mention that I only need to go thru the fuse box - let me know when you get a sec - thanks

I did not attempt to remove the steering column. I'm sure it would have been easier to get to the flasher unit had I removed the steering column but I didn't feel like taking everything apart.

It wasn't comfortable, but if you can get your head down by the brake pedal and look up, you will see the flasher unit. When you remove the old one, make a note of which side was up. That will help you when trying to put the new one in.

Let me know how it goes.
