Transmission problem

I've got a 96 4cyl 5spd with 104,000 mi. About a week ago it started jumping out of 4th gear while driving. At about 70,000 mi. I replaced the clutch and input bearing / seal. Is there a problem with these transmissions? Has anyone bought a trans. from any of the importers? I'm not sure if it's worth rebuilding the trans. when you can get one with very low miles for a few hundred dollars.

Metro trannies are small, therefore have small, weak synchro's. You can rebuild it, just put all new synchro's in, and use 75w90 gear oil. Also check www.car-part.com for junkyard transmissions for pertty cheap.

Is there a rebuild kit or buy all piece parts? Is the best place a GM dealer? Have you rebuilt one?

Also, is the 96 trans unique or will other years fit? Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm sure you guys have already hashed out alot of stuff already and I'm very late on a useful reply, but...
I rebuilt my 5 speed for about $150.00. I bought a metro rebuild kit from a trans supply house. Just say you are a mechanic and work for so and so and pay cash-customer will call. I replaced my clutch also and that raised it to $260.oo (clutch kit was $110.oo that I bought retail). I just looked at one of those Haynes manuals and pulled the gears and synchros off the shafts and did not replaced the needle bearing cages. It seems as though the oil pump laps up the oil into the 2 main shafts. The shafts were clogged with RTV and plastic crap and would not let oil up into the input and drive shafts. Be prepared to use a NICE clamshell puller because a press is useless. I'm a gearhead so I thought it was easy but for the mechanically declined it could be a complete brain drain. Sell me your old hammered metro manual trannys. I'd like to get into this.
