Good call,steel.
blind faith is no substitute for logic.
The only argument the christians seem to put up is"it's in the book".
If you point this out, they give you some line about belief in the bible being an indicator of your worth in god's eyes,or one of the many other "patches"that the church has come up with over the years.

Steel, you can yell for those folks to shut up and leave you alone, they probably wont, but I hope they do. They are going to keep trying to save your soul (in their minds) because they believe it’s the right thing to do. I doubt they are calling you on the phone and telling you to repent, so just ignore them or change the channel.
There are a lot of people who really don’t understand much about theology and oversimplify the belief systems of others. Those people are about as comical as the bible thumpers when they rail away and make a racket about their not being a god. Its kind of like the less filling - tastes great commercials.
btw – There is a god and screaming that there is not doesn’t change that fact. :D

Actualy there is NO god and screaming that there is won't change it. ;)
I totaly agree with you steel, most religions, (especialy christainity) are based on very little, and contain a lot of contridictions illogical statements and inrationalities.
But then if they didn't they wouldn't be religions.
If people want to believe in some higher power like a god becuase thats what keeps them happy and makes thier life fullfilled then good on them. Chances are the're living a much happier life than those who have yet to accept thier own existance. (although some would argue that be falling into religion they have denied thier true existance, but I don't totaly agree with that).
However I would much prefer they kept it to themselves. I don't care and dont want to know about how woderfull you think Jesus is, Iv been there, I was raised with it and schooled in it, and well all I can say is as far as im concerned its crap. And if you want to talk to me about it I will happily point that out to you. (unless I like you. :D )
As for believe in god being Narrowminded, well it all depends on why you believe in god, and how you interput what "god tells you", as well as a whole host of other factors.
e.g. J W Bush = ignorant.
Yogs = not ignorant.

One thing i just dont get, how, and why...do we exist....saying that "a big explosion happened that created it all" just doesnt do it, seems like something out of the bible, like a "coz we said so" deal. if the big bang happened it had to consist of some matter to explode with originally and it had to have a space to explode in as well, meaning something would have to exist beforehand.....soooo.....i dunno what to think, neither religion nor logic explains how, and more importantly, why, we exist.

Agree with Steel. Out of the ten commandments, one of them is "Thou shall not kill". That's interesting, seeing as more people are killed/killing in the name of "God" than anything else. Keep in mind, the same people who wrote the Bible also say the Earth was flat, and is the center of the universe. Anyone who didn't see this was promptly exiled or murdered, again, all in the name of "God". So if people KILL for this "God", then who is the real "devil"?

I don't want to be "judged".

Let me state that I don't believe in God, but open to it. However, my definition of God maybe more different than the Jewish/Christian/Muslim defintion.
I agree with MBTN that the desire to worship is human nature and that some people "need" a god (or two). I've argued this on other forums on other sites, no need to repeat what MBTN has said.
Now some people here are missing Steel's point, he's ranting about the whole my God is better than your God crap. This is just absolute bullshit! So let me get this straight... Christians came from Jews, but Christians will go to Heaven and Jews (and infidels) to Hell?!? But they were originally the same bloody God!! Fucking A!! So God is taking sides?! Reminds me of something I heard about the American Civil War: a priest commented to Lincoln, "I hope God is on our side", and Lincoln replied with "I hope we are on the side of God". To recap... each religion think its views are correct and that the other is wrong. It don't matter which side you are on, you think you're on the right side. And that is wrong!!

Hey jinshuan, its all point of view....Jews are the "chosen people" and all of the goyim (non-jews) are goin downstairs in judaism....christians, muslims, all have similar beliefs, so its more like pick a door and find out whats behind it.
Jews and Muslims sprout from the same father (abraham right? im not religious, i dont know) who had two wives, so, both muslims and jews believe they are the sons of abraham, and deny the other of such things....
Christians have the whole "dont do the christ thing, hell ya go" deal...
so, everybody has the same idea, all three worship the same god, its all a big load of bullshit......i believe that there is SOMETHING, i cant define it, ya just know its there. It doesnt care about which camp you sleep in, it doesnt care about which prophet you believe to be a true savior, and its comprised of all things, both good and evil, because without evil you cant truly define good..........
......i think im gonna crown myself bishop of this new religion so i dont have to pay taxes :p

Where oh where to begin? :D
Let's go from earliest to most recent shall we?
Out of the ten commandments, one of them is "Thou shall not kill". That's interesting, seeing as more people are killed/killing in the name of "God" than anything else. Keep in mind, the same people who wrote the Bible also say the Earth was flat, and is the center of the universe. Anyone who didn't see this was promptly exiled or murdered, again, all in the name of "God". So if people KILL for this "God", then who is the real "devil"?
The english translations of the Bible usually read "Thou shall not kill" when in fact it should be "Thou shall not murder". Many of the people who claim to be killing in the name of God are just looking for a banner to fight under, they don't care what it means it's just self justification. Killing, such as to defend yourself or perhaps in war isn't a good thing, but I don't think I would call it a sin. Now, the same people that wrote the Bible said the earth was flat? What book of the Bible is that in? I don't recall ever reading that. Perhaps your getting the writers of the old and new testaments confused with some of the early scientists such as Galileo and their battles with "the church". God is who He is, day after day. It's people that give Him a bad name. If I come into your house and shout "For George Bush!", then shoot you, does that make George Bush a murderer? Hardly.
Now on to Judeo-Christians, Orthodox Jews and Muslims. Abraham fathered two children, Isaac, and Ishmael. Isaac is the father of the Jewish people, and Ishmael of the Muslims. Now, Christians as you all know believe that Y'shua was the Moschiac(Jesus, the Christ). Orthodox Jews are still waiting for the Moshiac to come, believing that the new testament is false and the Y'shua was not who He claimed to be, Yahweh in the flesh. Muslims also believe that Y'shua was nothing more than a prophet, and that they are the rightful people of God. Those are some differences in the 3, but my fingers are too tired to type more at the moment.Feel free to email me with questions or comments(don't be rude or just plain stupid, I won't respond). [email protected]

Actually, my history class had a nice big bash...i mean "discussion" session about the crusades. There are like 6 muslim girls im my class who repeatedly brought up the whole religion thing when the topics should have been the long lasting effects on history. I think history is something everyone should have a knowledge of. Those who are ignorant of it are doomed to repeat it. Basically, my opinion is:
Yeah everyone has fucked up. I cant fix it by changing something now, just live with it.
Look at the USA. The Indians in the US are blaming Chris Columbus for fucking up their happy ancestors. What should we do about it? Reverse 500 years of history? Take Isreal and the PLO. Isreal is here, its gonna stay, get over it. Why cant people see past their own fucking nose?
I believe in God/Jesus/the whole bit. Ya gotta have faith in something, and whatever yours is, i will respect it. It takes a stronger person to say "there is something bigger than me" than someone who says "i am king of the hill"
*Edit* About Jihad, its people like Osama B who fucked up Jihad.

PEOPLE KILL ONE ANOTHER FOR THEIR "GOD".
Your blaming a system of beliefs for the actions of a few. That's bigotry. Just like someone who gets robbed by a black man, then thinks all black people are bad. I don't hate muslims by any means, the Islamic faith is similar to Judeo-Christianity in some respects, mainly differing on the deity of Y'shua and also, Islam is focused slightly more on works than Christianity. People have done things in the name of a religion, or a god, throughout history. Most people only focus on those commited in the name of Christ, and recently the acts of claimed muslims. Not everyone who professes a faith practices it to its fullest.
Let me clarify on a previous post. Abraham fathered 2 children, Isaac and Ishmael. They each had a different mother. Ishmael's mother was Hagar, who slept with Abraham with the approval of his wife Sarah, to fulfill Yahweh's promise to Abraham that his descendents would be like the sand on the sea shore. Yahweh however, did intend for Sarah to bear the child, even at her late age. There was always enmity between the brothers, and it still exists today between the Jews and the arabs.

Yeah, that clarification is exactly what ive always heard, so, yeah :)
and the bigotry thing is right too, and such conflicts will always occur for as long as someone thinks differently from another

So...MBTN...you dont believe in any sort of higher power? You think everything just *poof* worked out so that we, humans become intelligent/sentient? Do you think your ancestors were monkeys?? I for one refuse to belive that i am related to a monkey.

Quote from my biology tutor(circa 1976)
"Those people who refuse to accept the theory of evolution are themselves a living example of something from which we have evolved."
(Or words to that effect.I forget exactly. It was 25 years ago)I like the quote, but it seems to be the antithesis of the 'God made it all, read your Bible'

Hehehe, thats just my sarcastic answer to in your face evolutionists. The way i see it, is that we did evolve, but when it says 7 days in the Bible, its probably 7 long-ass time periods. The way the Bible was written was that people who had never been more than 5 miles from their homes could grasp big ideas without getting overwhelmed by the scale of creation and all that and saying "aw fuckit"

C'mon people, if religion didn't give us an excuse to kill one another we'd have to go through all the trouble of finding other reasons.
By the way, there's a cool billboard in my town that just went up: I was serious about that no killing thing : God

Ever hear of the Crusades? Wasn't that a massive movement where millions were murdered by Christians? Doesn't that contradict their religion "Thou shal not kill"? I beleive it does! What's been happening in the "holiest" place on Earth for hundreds of years? Hmm. All that because people can't settle religious differences...
I reiterate: The same people who wrote the bible thought the earth was flat. They thought the earth was the center of the universe. People who opposed were executed, exiled et cetera. 100's of years later, they were right all along. Go fig.

Very true. These people (who wrote the bible) were also wrong then about pretty much anything they wrote. Sience has proved so much since. Hell, the Bible contradicts itself over and over. These people also didn't know how to explain certain events, so they said it came from "God". They didn't know what "God" was. They used the name "God" to strike fear in those who do wrong. "You're going to Hell because you are bad. God doesn't like you. You have sinned..." "God" was a way to keep people in line and under control. People were stupid back then, they didn't know what the hell was going on.
After life, yes, I believe we go "poof" as you say it. What happens before life? You didn't feel, you didn't see, you didn't think before you were existed, so why should after your existence be the same? I've read everyone's posts in this topic. And I take them seriously (hence my responses). I hope you read mine. Some of my responses are opinionated, others are factual: The Crusades, all the VIOLENCE. It was all for ones belief in God. Why believe in Christianity (or any other religion for that matter) when I can believe in the truth of science?

You may also remember that science has proved itself wrong on many many occasions too. So blind faith in science is also misplaced.

I think it would interesting to hear a few examples of this. What did the Bible say the science has misproven? And no, so-called scientific theories like the crap you hear on TLC doesn't count. On what points did the Bible contradict itself?
Ever hear of the Crusades? Wasn't that a massive movement where millions were murdered by Christians?
Once again, you're blaming a religion for the actions of the crusaders. If the beliefs were the problem, then why haven't I been on a killing spree lately? It was the people, they were misguided. Even if there was no such thing as Christianity, the crusades, or something similar would have happened. What about the holocaust? Are all socialists genocidal murderers? Nope. I don't agree with them, but that doesn't mean I have to accuse them of all being part of some anti-jew conspiracy because of what Hitler did.The nazi's did not define socialism, neither do the crusades define Christianity.I'm going to bed now because I'm sleepy and I'm not making any sense!:D

Well, MTBN, i seen that this discussion isnt going anywhere. My point is that religion of any kind is fine. Its the humans who fuck it up. The idea of religion is a sort of perfection on Earth, obviously impossible.
The Bible is supposed to be inspired by God, not just written by some dude. Yes i know that some parts of it are contradictory, but so is some science. And about the Earth being flat. Whens the last time you walked on foot around the Earth? Back then, people didnt get around so much. Its hard to see the big picture when you are part of it and cant get outside to see it.

I have done this many times in the past and it just happened again. I sat here and seriously took a few minutes to think about our existance, and tried to make sense of it all. Space...time...how it got there...how something has to start( in time) somewhere, so if the big bang happened where did it come from and what was there before it...also along that same line when did God just 'Magically' appear.
After about five minutes I woke up from a haze and I realized that I was lost. I think that is how religion came to be. A preacher takes people into this deep philosophical discussion, they come out lost and confused, and then he comes out with God, blah blah blah, it explains it all so that everybody can understand, and as we all know people love to believe what they can understand, and that is why religion is so popular, especially in countries or areas where the education level is low.

"And about the Earth being flat. Whens the last time you walked on foot around the Earth? Back then, people didnt get around so much. Its hard to see the big picture when you are part of it and cant get outside to see it."
Exactly, the people back then didn't know much. They needed a way of explaining all that they did not know. Hence, that's where "God" came in.

Like I wrote before, I never said it was in the bible or religion. Just that the people who wrote those books and practiced those religions thought it was. Those who proved them wrong were seen as devil worshipers and such. But of course they turned out to be right all along. Funny.:)

Lol yeah. Well, in those days the church was ALWAYS right, and if there were any ideas opposite what the church thought, bad for you. Now its different for the most part.
Like i said in another thread, everyone has fucked up something, get over it. You cant change the past.
