Check Engine Light doesn't light up??

1991 318is.....went for smog test but failed because Check Engine Light doesn't light at all!! It passed emissions but this failed the car!! Does the light have it's own fuse(which one)? does the bulb need to be replaced(how hard to diassemble dash)?
