McLaren should've had tests like the license tests in Gran Turismo that you had to pass the first try in order to get one of those cars.

Whoa! Heep has "w00t" in his sig! You truly are on the path to wumpiness, I suppose.

Yes, Mclaren should have it's ownere sign a paper that says if they mess up the car in any way their testicles will be removed by starved, wild boars.

I wonder what they did with those cars? Did McLaren rebuild them? I'm sure the owners wouldn't take them to a body shop, and even if they did....what would the shop do? Or, are they just SOL?

A few of you may have heard that a couple of years ago, (early 1999) the multi-millionaire Chris Dawes was killed in his friends McLaren in England after hitting a tree at over 180mph. The car was completely destroyed as were the driver and both passengers. Dawes was not driving his own car at the time. I was unable to determine what happened to his car after his death. I am sure it was siezed by England officials as Dawes was arrested for drug possession with intent to supply.

So there are only 97 McLarens out there! I wonder what happened to the tree, but I'm glad there arent any pictures (I dont want to see a deadly accident)

I was never shown any images of the crash, but I am sure it is much like the crash pictured from XP1, the unpainted car, that crashed in the Nambian desert during testing in 1993. It caught fire and completely burned. The test driver at the time escaped completely unscathed after flipping end over end more than once, sliding upside down and continuing to roll over and over from 150mph. The car remained completely intact, the fire started after the car remained upsided down as oil leaked onto the hot exhaust. It is buried at the McLaren factory with suiting tombstone.

XP2 was submitted to the crash test at MIRA but was the ONLY car to leave the facility in driveable condition. It may have been repaired.

XP3 was also lost to a crash, I believe..

I also know of another car that a young .com kid from Frisco that had his car a matter of a few weeks (maybe months) before crashing it near Los Angeles. The car was sent back to England for repairs.

I have unconfirmed rumors of 1 other car, but believe it also was repaired.

Several GTRs were damaged badly from racing incidents.
#025R Engine fire 1996
#022R Bad engine fire 1996

There were others as well, but all in the name of being the BEST...

The McLaren pictures that have been posted here that show considerable damage are actually quite rebuildable and with very few exceptions have been repaired for existing owners in some cases and for new owners that purchased the cars in the damaged condition. To my knowledge, only 3 cars have been totally written off as unrepairable.

There have been no publicly manufactured replicas of the McLaren. McLaren Cars, Ltd. is very serious as to their legal ownership of the McLaren shape and are quite quick to pursue those that abuse that ownership.

In defence of Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson)!

The guy is really involved in the sports/classic car scene and frequently races in historic festivals in England (like Goodwood etc). If you read mags like Classic & Sportscar you'll know about that. That DOES NOT make him an ace driver of course, but surely he's certainly not just someone who buys the most expensive toys to show off. Also this specific accident was all over the papers in England since it happened on a busy city street (in London I think) when he crashed onto the back of an Austin Metro (it's a small very inexpensive city car) driven by an old lady. They were doing no more than 30 mph if I'm not mistaken!

I actually have a serious suggestion about this... There should be different levels of driver's licenses. The lowest being a license that only allows you to drive less expensive, "easier to drive" cars... All the way up to a racing license. I really think this would be a good way to keep rare exotics from falling into the wrong hands...

Ringo

Easy guys, there is a chance that those accidents were not the drivers' fault. I miself had some dummass pull out in front of me when I was doing 40mph, and he only gave me 5 feet to stop. The McLaren is really low and possibly difficult to see in traffic.

I will never watch anything with Rowan Atkinson (sp?) in it again!

I was pretty sure in a top gear review of the F1 that they said you had to do a basic driving test.. and they always hassled you about the car and stuff.. maybe later models they stopped, or these cars were bought 2nd hand.

By the time i get enough money to buy one they will all be gone.. damn you McLaren make another car!! you can surely better the F1, its not inpossible.. wish i could win 1billion$'s so i could design a new car with them and keep myself one.. would be worth it;)

As for Mr Bean, I heard he was a racecar driver (spare time of course) and a decent one at that.
Far better than many of the multi-millionaires/billionaires who have McLarens, you guys just whine because you know who he is and that he wrecked one.

I also read on this forum that he was doing 100mph and rear ended a mini cooper, and did a few flips. I'd hate to see what happened to the small car he hit.

And as for the rearended pic, thats great that the cats smashed up like theyre supposed to :D

lol, i find it ironic he hit the same type of car his character mr bean drives:D

probably a real life mr bean pissed off couse some wannabe hit his car.

Guess i was a little hard on the guy, i dont know the story, i never expected he would even own a car like this.. so i guess he probably a race driver.. and anyone going 100mph in the street could run into trouble.

I sware crashing a mclaren F1 would be the worst feeling in the world.. you probably wouldnt even notice that your head was smashed open, 'my car!!!', and i myself would forever hate myself.. even if i could just buy another one cause of insurance.. good luck insuring the most expensive car in the world when you allready crashed one and made them pay millions.

mr.bean has a mclaren! i thought he was just some gay really bad actor:D .because pretty much most of the movies he was in was gay(no offense). btw that test thing that you guys were talking about, i dont think it would work, because usually people dont usually drive like they did in the test, like in the test you might do good, then when you drive on the streets you end up to speed and might crash.

05-12-2003, 01:08 PM
the car Mr Bean hit suffered very little damage. I think the rear bumper (fender) fell off and that was it. The F1 went underneath the car and scooped it up. If i remember correctly the mini needed £150 worth of repairs, while the macca needed £30,000 at least.
