Tail Gate

While trying to find the bulb for the break lights, I opened the tailgate and pulled out the door latch thing. I tried to replace it the way it was but apparently I didn't because, when I push the door release button, nothing happens. Is there a switch or some kind of release lever so that I can open the tailgate?
