as far as chargers go i like the 68 best... but since you want either a 69 or a 70 i would go with the 70. mainly because of the grill... in the 68 model the headlights wre hidden and the car was a bit faster than the 70 (68 0-60 in 5.3, 70 0-60 in 5.5) but the hp and how fast it is all depends on you. a 440 came out with 375 the magnum did n e way, and the 383 come with 335 also magnum, so it all depends on what you get and how much money you got to put into it, as for a 69 or 70 deffinitely the 70, but i still think the 68 looks better than both of em...

Definitely a personal choice as the differences are mainly styling. It all depends on what is available in your price range.

go with the 70, it was the last year before they started lowering engine power (hp and torque) basically because too many people were crashing them and as you probably know they aren't nearly as safe as current autos. so for insurance reasons they lowered power. Also, we were on the brink of a gas crisis and the pollution became more of a problem so naturally to achieve better effencicy they lowered their engine number outputs. hopefully this makes sense to you and i haven't rambled too far off of the subject.... go w/ the 70

68 or 70... love the long uninterrupted grills on those two. 70 has those kick arse fake side scoops!
69 still brings smiles from the Dukes of Hazzard fanbois.
i'd love to own a black 68 charger with a 440/dana rear. oh the goosebumps!

All three cars ('68-'70) are functionally equal. The only real differences for your purposes are appearance. As long as the car came with a 383 or 440 (or a Hemi, but you won't find one of them just layin' around looking to be bought...), the B/RB engine will fit without modification. While the car isn't as heavy as it looks, it's still a bit bulky for a small block to be really effective at a reasonable level of tune.
The 440 is the best man for the job. Parts are reasonable and power is easy to get. Disregard anything concerning compression ratios or emmission controls (why they dropped compression ratios), as all that will be addressed when your machinist designs your engine.
It should be noted, there's one obscure model in '69, the "Charger 500", that, if you were lucky enough to find one, is the most aerodynamic of the non-winged things. You'll recognize it by the Coronet/Super Bee back window, instead of the Charger's normal "tunnel back" (like earlier GM A-bodies).
Always liked those cars. Too bad they weren't "survivors" like the GM cars of the era. Too many have rusted out and blown away. Fords had the same problem. Finding any nice (low or no rust) '68 thru '70 would be a "both feet" situation if that's the body style of Charger you're after. As stated earlier, they're mostly the same but for some cosmetics. Don't get hung up on a particular year.

yea, I like the 68 the best of all, even though we have a 70 R/T in the garage... overall either yr would be a great choice, but if I had to pick I'd go 70 :)

Any of those would suit me. Even a Coronet would suit me!
OTOH, I'd rather have an E-body Barracuda or a Duster...

Dude... Vicious, I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but we can't make a decision for ya, I mean ur decision has to come from the heart man, otherwise you'll end up regreting it later, I see it in my dad's eyes when he gave his mom's 68 charger to the junkyard, it was a nice blue one... Good luck with the buy and post some pics!

The 69, first the grille looks better and it will be worth more because it is the duke's car.

The '68-'70 are all good years. 1969 is my favorite year for Mopars (and Cadillacs and probably all muscle cars) so I choose that year for the Charger.

I vote for the 1970 Charger. Of the second generation Chargers (1968, 1969 & 1970), I like the 1970 front end best of all. I prefer the 1969/1970 rear end better than the 1968. The dual round taillights of the 1968 do nothing for me.
My brother once owned a 1970 Charger 500. This car had a 383 Magnum with Torqueflite. The dual exhaust had a pair of blown out glass packs in place of the mufflers with no tailpipes beyond the glass packs. This car was loud and a good performer. I nicknamed this car "The Beast" and it stuck in our family. It was dark metallic green with black vinyl top and white bucket seat interior with center console and floor shift. A neat old car.

aaahh, my first car, a 1970 cornet w/a 383, it was in 79 I was 16, paid $225.00 for it from a girl had just bought a pinto and wanted to get rid of the "gas hog" (gas shortages), still remember the plate #, 862 bli, no rust at all, ran like a raped ape, in 80 it was stolen, found it 1 month later, "no help from the cops" at a dealership, the guy tried to trade it in on a new van, it was never the same, I sold it a year later for $500.00, and bought a 68 firebird 400. I sure wish I had that car again, I saw it 10 years later in long beach cali, and it was just thrashed, a druggie was sleeping in it.
Nothing replaces that first car,
Nothing replaces that first car,

My first project was going to be a 70 Charger about a year & a half ago. Peeled it from a guy in my neighborhood - he'd had it forever, never drove it and I WANTED IT! Got the courage to go to the door & ask - he sold it to me for less than I ever thought possible and I drove it home!
Before I could get the car into my name I was offered 2.5 times what I paid so away she went. Still regret it but completely understand your dilemma. Personally the 68 is my fave but there are so few differences body-wise it's a judgment call. As far as HP, that can always be modified with enough time & money!
I have to ask - where on earth are you located that you have the option? In the Pacific NW these are very hard to come by and of course in the past few years anyone with a Mopar thinks they're sitting on a gold mine regardless of condition. Thank you Barrett-Jackson! :banghead:
Look at the grill & tail panel - that's gonna make the decision for you!

Welcome to AF, if you look at the last post date it would seem this thread has run it's course, we'll see.

Because of the "Dukes" connection, '69s are scarcer and more expensive than '70s. There's even a body shop "cottage industry" welding '69 rear panels/taillights onto '70s. Unless I was going to paint it orange, I'd look for a better deal on a '70.

The Duke's '69 will never be as cool as Bill Hickman's black '68 in "Bullitt".
