I have a 1993 base auto probe that puts out about 130 hp and 120 something torque with the intake modifications ive made to it and I have a friend with a bone stock 1997 auto cavailer ls convertible with the 2.2 liter. Who would win in a race? there is also a 200 lb weight difference(probe is lighter).

The Cav would win, its a Chev. no ford can beat there superior enginering.

Mustang=Corvette

Which would you rather have??

Ill take a Chevrolet over a Ford any day. Unless we are talking about an older stang. Those are so nice.

PS nothing against any ford owners, i have just had better experance with the Chevs:)

You would win hands down if it was stock vs stock.
If it was modified at all that would be another story. That 2.2 puts down about 90hp to the wheels. It runs about 17.5 in the 1/4. If it is swapped with the 2.2 ecotec, you would lose. The 2.2 ecotec puts about 130 to the wheels.

both are slow as crap, i work at a chevy dealership and i driven every cavalier and they are all slow as balls even the z24 and all the ecotec's...they are all built like crap they are so crappy....

sorry if you like them but they are just crappy...brand new ones making all kinds of noises like they have 100,000 miles on them....nasty

Man, I've been trying to be polite to you, as you are local to me, and I have met you personally, but where is that dyno sheet of an actual confirmed stock Ecotec?

You're telling us that it has a 10-HP loss through the drivetrain, or are you saying that it's underrated?

Before you say stuff like that again, especially since your credibility around here has been going down lately, please come back with something to back it up, k?

How does a chevy have "superior engineering"? I have the superior engineering because I have a MAZDA engine!

Now now ladies... let's keep it civil.

No need for a pissing contest on who makes a better whatever...

Yes a Mazda is better than a Chev engine in this case, but im comparing the 2 no imports.

Sorta reminds me off the 100yd dash in the Special Olympics...even if you win you still lose. ;)

THAT sounds more plausible.

I see you drive an old Civic. I used to have a '90 CRX Si, pretty much the same car as you. I have to say, I put more money into that CRX than I did into my 86 Cavalier, 92 Olds Cutlass, 94 S10, 91 Tracker, and '99 Sonoma combined. Most people swear on Honda's reliability, but I'd take a GM anyday, but would take a lot of thinking to buy another Honda.

i have both a crx and a hatch and i used to drive a 93 civic sedan, i work for GM dealership, i wouldent buy one even with my discount, the only thing i would buy is a truck even then i would be tempted to go ford, my crx has 130,000 miles on it and ill be happy to take on any cavalier, brand new or what have you

i work with cavaliers all day, they are nothing but problems and they are built poorly GM uses parts off of everyother vehicle it seems on in the interior hell an escalade is a suburban with caddy badges...why spend alot more for badges? even tho i work for them i wouldent recommend a GM to anyone...not a new one anyway

Psman32@af

oy, do you honestly think that the only difference between a escalade and a suburban is badges and some different sheet metal? thats real inteleginet there. And no duh that GM uses parts from other cars for another car, specially when it shares platforms. And do you honestly think that GM is the only car company to do that,c ause to me it sounds like you do.I would much rather have a cav than a civic any day, i dont like most of what GM makes, and i dont like any small cars, but id still take a cav over a civic, specially like a 99 or whenever it was before they switched to the new body style.

Back to the original question, it's a toss up. If a '97 Cavalier with a 2.2 and ATX really does only make 90+ whp on a dyno, then it would be a close match. A 4 cyl 2.0L Probe engine makes 118 crank hp which measures at about 95 whp, but that's on the MTX. An ATX 4 cyl will probably dyno even less. ATX 4 cyl Probe SE's can do the 1/4 in about 17.5-18 seconds. A base might be able to do it in 17-17.5 seconds.

All I can say for sure is that the race will be slow. Just race him.

btw, be sure to remove your spare and jack. Also race him when you are close to the last line on the gas tank (less than 1/4 tank). The less weight the better. Although I doubt that you will have much of a traction problem, set your front tires to mid 20's and your rears to the max pressure (probably 44 psi but read the sidewall).

Have fun and change your tranny fluid frequently. ATX Probe trannies suck if you don't maintain them.
