does the tornado really give better gas mileage. if so how much?
thanks

I saw a test one of the car magazines did on it they even ran the car on the dyno and the end result was that the fuel economy was unchanged and the hp was slightly less with the tornado installed. Which makes sence when you think about it as the theory behind the whole thing is flawed anyone who says that it makes a difference has their heads in the clouds

cool, i didnt really think it made sense either, how the hell could spinning air move faster than air moving in a strait line? Im thinkiong about getting a k and n filter for my truck, does it make much difference as far as throttle response?

and i was thinking about removing the pipe that draws hot air of the engine into the intake and sealing up the hole on the intake. is this ok, and do i just leave the other end open?
thanks for any help
Wade

what year and engine size do you have chevywade? I have been considering the same modification you mentioned in the second half of your last reply, I really wish someone with a litte more knowledge about that would reply, cause I am pretty curious also.

Check in the earlier posts i believe it is about TB's or EGR's. but if you referring to the EGR assembly there was a whole thread with "more knowledge" about this mod. Check it out.

i would invest in a tb spacer (i have a helix tb spacer) seems to help out some with the tourque.

You guys wanna talk about bills!?! Wait till you're 25 with a wife and a 5-month-old boy at home, two cars, house, student loan, credit cards, utilities, and all on a 40k/yr income. then you can cry about not having any money for the toys you want! :owned:

You guys do know that if you are driving a Silverado you already have a tornado built in to the air cleaner intake tube!! Dont waste ur money to buy another one!!

are u sure, mines an 89. but i dont know crap about cars. i was lookin at my intake more closely today and i noticed a butterfly valve that is held closed by a spring. it is connected to a duct that runs down and draws heat off of the exhaust, and i cant figure out why the hell they would put that on there. any ideas?

its a heatriser for those cold mornings........it diverts warm air off the exhaustmanifold to your breather untill the motor warms up

i dont even want to know how many bills i am going to have at 25. thats exactly why i want to buy my toys now when i am still young (19) that way they are all payed off by the time i turn 25. well all will be except my student loans.

but the butterfly must restric alot of air, and how does it stopo drawing hhot air when the engine heats up?

A few months back I bought a Tornado, I had it in for about a month, My Gas mileage improved a bit but I felt like My truck was struggling for air most of the time.. I am using the K&N Drop in filter. the tornado is okay if you need to save a few bucks on gas,but power wise im convinced it robs you. you have use a heavier foot with the tornado to accelerate, which got on my nerves and I Pulled it out,Leaving me with a nice shelf nic nak. After reading a post at this forum I removed my Air Flow Sensor Screen and this works great.. Thanks everyone!! =)

Chevywade, Do yourself a favor and forget about the tornado. Useless piece of crap. For what they cast, you could spend a few more bucks and buy a Helix throttle body spacer. That will make a difference. Really woke up my '93 5.7.

It works off of the engine temperature. In older cars when the engine warms up, it'll allow the butterfly valve to close and not take in any more of the warm air, just outside air. Some of these are controlled by a vacuum port that runs from your thermostat housing.

Chevy Wade,
The previous post tells it pretty good, the heat riser is an important piece of equipment, especially in cold climates but if it fails to close off hot air when it's suppose to it will cost the engine horse-power.

Basically the engine prefers nice cold "Dense" air for a good cylinder charge, but the problem with TBI and older carburators is that the atomized fuel/air mix tends to condense back into a liquid fuel before fineshing it's journy down to the cylinders because of a cold intake manifold, so the answer was to increase the air temp while the manifold is heating up.

The next problem is, after the engine warms up the intake becomes to warm. Now the air is less dense (Thin) and again you loose horse-power.
So the ultimate fix is to inject atomized fuel right at the intake valves, and build the intake manifold with composites that don't transfer heat as well as cast iron or aluminum.

The key is properly atomized fuel, and air as cold as possible for good milage and great horse-power.

All of these fix's took place in the fall of 1998 on the newly designed BAD boy Silverado.

Did anybody fall asleep!

-Mike
