Need Help!!!

ok heres my problem, i own a 1966 vw bug, the steering on it is way loose and has alot of play in it. it takes me 1/4 turn of the steering wheel just to make the tires move, i was told thta u can manualy tighten the sterring and i was wondering if any of u know how to do this. if u do plzz let me know i would aprecitate it very much.

It depends on where the play is. The only adjustable part is the steering box itself. But you should check for other problems first. It could be a problem with the rubber connector that attaches the steering shaft to the box. Also check your tie rod ends for play. To see if it is in the box itself you need to jack the front end of the car and go under to turn the steering shaft (at the rubber connector) and watch the pitman arm (shaft the tie rods are connected to) to see if it dosen't move directly with the steering shaft. If the play is there you can remove the cover plate at the spare tire directly in front of the box to gain access to the adjuster screw. Again with front tires off the ground loosen the lock nut and then tighten the slotted screw. Only turn this screw until the play is gone, do not tighten it, then lock it with the nut. Beware, sometimes this will not work because the box is worn beyond adjustable limits. You should have a slight bit of play when it's adjusted correctly.
