Crankshaft position sensor???

92 dakota 3.9L
On cold starts my idle dies out then comes back over and over. after it warms up it does fine but has a lack of power. mechanic said it was the CSPS (subject.) costly reapair, want to make sure. any ideas?

I had a similar problem with my '92 Dakota V6, but mine was due to corrosion in the ignition system. Check your spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor for corrosion. If you need to replace the distributor cap and rotor, I would suggest you get copper instead of aluminum. I had aluminum parts but the salt air / fog here by Savannah really corroded everything so bad, it was very hard to start.

I would also try doing a tune up first and go from there. I found CSPS for your truck for $89 and $76 here http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=213794 not too expensive. If it mounts anything like the one on my truck it's only 2 bolts. Its a bitch to get at but you dont have to remove anything. not a very big job.

I had the CSPS changed but there is still no difference. My buddy said it may be the "hall efects switch" at least that is what I think he is saying. he said it is under the distributor. let me know what yall think please.

get a good shop to check all the sensors with a scan tool and do a tune up(plugs, cap&rotor, air&fuel filters). it gets expensive when you start throwing parts at a problem. i suggest taking a look at the intake and iac(idle air controller) these are prone to gumming up on dodges. i saw one where the iac was completely clogged with carbon. get some carb cleaner and a toothbrush and get scrubbing!!! good luck

What are your codes?? You should have some at least stored if not thrown. And the crank position sensor is not that much, plus it's not hard to do. You say it dies at idle, but then doesn't have power after warming up? That could be something other than sensors. But there is another thread we
