replaced steering column,car won't start now

I have a 96 taurus and had to replace the steering column because the slider rod in the column broke.(moves the ignition switch when key is moved.).I tried to start the car after installing the new column , but it will crank and run for about a second and stall.The theft light is also on at this time.When I bought the new column it came with the keys and a lock cylinder.So seeing this and having no use for the old column I threw it out.(I took all the electrical stuff off)I left the old key cylinder in it.Do these keys have a chip in them,and can I get a key made at Ford with the new key profile and old chip.Will this work,or will I have to bring the car to ford to have it reprogrammed.

contact your ford dealer, with the vin number they should be able to tell if your key had a chip in it. you should have saved the old key and tumbler and transplanted it in the new column. also you may have to install a wire from the old harness to the new one for the security system if it had one. was the new column a factory replacement?
