Paint Job Carelessly Done...

I have a pewter color 99 silverado truck. About a week ago i took the truck in to have a few minor dents taken out above the wheel well on the side panel of the truck bed. well, he took the dents out and ended up painting the whole side of the truck panel, which i guess is standard. After he painted and put the clear coat on, everything looked great. However, about a week later when i was washing my truck, i noticed the the surface on the hood, top and opposite side of the truck was very rough, felt like it really needed a wax job. Then it occurred to me. when he painted that side panal, he only covered the immediate area. When he was painting that side, the paint mist from the paint gun got on the unprotected parts of the truck (including the windshield). This is VERY annoying, it takes away from the sheen and also dirt is attracted to the surface like a magnet cause of the porus surface. SO, my question is... is the painter supposed to cover the entire vehicle for this type of work. (what is standard?) and, can this be fixed somewhat easily and without much cost...ie claybar, or something like that, or does it need to ALL be repainted. This guy said hes been in this business for 20 years (you think he would know about this). If i take it back can i make him fix it? I dont want to sound to anal, but this really bugs me. Thanks

You can never be too anal about your truck. Autos are big investments, and professionals body shops should treat them as such. I would go raise as much hell as possible. I would take it to him and tell him to do whatever it takes to make it right. If he has been in the business for that long, he should have known to take a little more care on the job. I had a body shop do this to me once, only he got overspray on one of my wheels. I simply showed him what he had done, and he ordered me a new rim. He knew he had made a mistake, and that he was liable for it. Just go talk to the guy and see what he says. I would hope he would take care of it, but if he doesn't, I would take it to the next level and then see what his attitude is.

Here's the scoop, I've been painting cars for about 20 or so years as a sideline,,, The guys probably taped the truck off to spray the side,,what you described is overspay from the clear coat, that stuff gets everywhere. The only way to stop the clear overspay is to mask the entire car off when you paint even just one panel. This is time consuming and expensive but has to be done, I even make sure I tape off the door jambs so the overspray doen't get in there. Most times the overspray WILL come off,,,most times if your body man sands it with ultrafine (2000 plus grit) sandpaper and then wheels it a couple times it will come right out, might have to hit it with a little thinner first. As for the window, a razor blade will usually do the trick. Its really not as big a deal as it sounds, most paint guys can straighten this out in an hour or so. These things happen, but a little more care on your painters part will help stop it. Good Luck.

Thanks for the info. I took the truck back to the shop and what he ended up doing was wetting the truck down with soap and water then taking a clay bar, he ran over the surface of the truck. This did the trick it smoothed out the roughness caused by the over spray. For the windshield, I cant remember what he used but it was not a razor blade. It seemed to be some chemical he used with a rag. Whatever it was, it took took it right off. He was telling me that detailing shops charge big money to do this, I was like "well if you caused it in the first place, its your responsibility to fix it" but anyways, im happy. Later all
