Small block. And they built it because they wanted an engine of moderate size with the torque of a big block, and enough fuel/emissions efficiency to meet the growing demands on the industry. If I remember right they love to suck gas...and I meen suck! If ya got a couple bucks, I'd swap the motor out with a 351 Cleveland....now thats all the power you will ever need, you'll be glad you did. You remember the 351 Cleveland don't you? It dominated NHRA Pro Stock Drag Racing before the dawn-of-the-mountain-motor was effectively banned from NASCAR. That really sucks!!

ford didn't make a 400 small block engine,only chevy did....if you are sure you have a 400,it's probably a 400 modified...which is a big block

Actuall, the 400/351M and Clevelands are considered small blocks. Only FE's (352-428) and the 370-460's are considered big blocks.....

The 400 is not a cleveland, it is part of the modified series. The 400 is a small block, the bore size is 4 inch, a square motor, 4 inch bore and 4 inch stroke. Winsors are a small block, modified are a small block with the 370 series bellhousing, the FE's are big blocks along with the 370 series.

The first year 400 had the small block bell housing pattern like that of the 289,302, 351w. After that it switched to the 385 series bell housing like that of the 370,429,460. Wether it's considered a smal or big block is debate-able due to the fact it is of the 385 series engines.
