Code 41 cam sensor

I have a problem similar to the one posted Nov last year. I have a 89 Park Ave and had just accelerated fairly strongly (requiring a downshift of the auto trans) when the check engine light came on. Checked the codes and got a 41. The wiring is good. If the sensor is unplugged the engine won't start so I'm assuming I have the same problem the other fella referenced. However I didn't see any remedy for this problem posted. Can anyone help? Can the magnet interrupter on the camshaft gear be replaced without removing the front timing cover? If so, is there a fairly straightforward way to do so that is not too time consuming? I just can't believe an eight dollar part would require what amounts to almost a complete tear down of the front cover.

Code 41 is your cam sensor/interuptor and/or ecm. I'd do the cam and crank sensors first, since it is external. the cam sensor is fairly easy to replace. Once you have the cam sensor out, turn the cam (by turning the crank) and using a good light and a mirror, see if the interuptor is visible and in place. If it is not visible, the timing cover will have to come out to replace the interuptor on the cam gear.

How difficult is it to take off the timing cover of a 3.8L olds? Do you have to remove the alternator, water pump, etc? Do you have to use gaskets for re assembly or do you use RTV gasket maker?
