This is the Scale MotorSport Super kit for the 1/12 Scale Tamiya Porsche 934/935.

$525

Doesnt that hurt to spend $525 on a model? I only spend like 50

PRIVATEER

$525, plus the cost of the kit, plus materials, yea...it's a lot of money, but I've been building models for cose to 30 years. This project is only gonna happen once, and I want it done right. Many people spend that much on beer in a year. Not me. It just depends on how much you want something. More pics are coming

I thought you all would like a closer look at Scale Motorsports' detail kit for Tamiya's big Porsche.

In general, there are way too many parts to post an indepth review here, so I will try to keep it short.

Instructions: The instructions coincide with the Tamiya kit instructions. There are 29 steps. They appear to be clear and easy to follow. There are some photoetch parts that are not covered by the instructions (seat belt buckles, antenna base), SMS does have a web site for builders of this kit and is planning on supplementing the instruction sheet there. Also included is a separate booklet that has schematic's of the following: the lubrication system, fuel injection system, throttle linkage, engine electrical, ignition system, and cooling systems. These are in color and easy to understand.

Decals: SMS has included a complete decal sheet in Martini livery. The decals are beautiful, in perfect register. All of the smaller decals are also included (gages, labels, etc.).

CD-ROM: Over 100 pictures of the actual car on CD-ROM are included for reference. Pictures are high resolution and include many useful shots of all areas of the car except the chassis. The only picture of the suspension are of what is visible in the wheel well.

Machined Parts: The kit comes with over 150 machined metal parts. These include everything from valve stems for the rims to the shift linkage. Some of these parts are extremly tiny, such as, hood pins, hub dogs, and dash buttons. A full set of metal pulleys and front and rear shocks are also included. I particularly like the hub shafts that allow the wheels to be removed and re-installed on the completed car. All of these parts seem to be machined to an almost jewelry-type quality.

It sure does. Consult www.scalemotorsport.com and you'll see it applies to this kit also in the description.

I smell of Rosso. Kits like this won't sell very many, and it's really a risky move. I hope they don't go bankrupt, 'cause SM is too good a company to lose.

PRIVATEER
01-20-2004, 11:37 PM
Although this kit will work with the 934, many of the parts are not applicable. I am not even sure the rims will work. If you call SMS they can tell you more about it.

Layla's Keeper
01-20-2004, 11:42 PM
I doubt SM is going to suffer much for doing this. They know it's a limited market and an expensive product and have priced it accordingly.

Something to the tune of 500 odd dollars, right Privateer?

Besides, so long as we keep buying carbon fiber decals from them, they'll be fine. That's their bread & butter.

Mathew Wells knows he is gunning for a niche market with this. Accordingly he has limited the run to 505 and has stated definitively that there will be no reissue. There is still plenty of interest in the Martini 935 kit on places like eBay, so I'd expect the 505 kits to be snapped up pretty quick. In any event the pricing means SMS will be making a VERY tidy profit on each unit sold. In some ways I'd like to see the project fail, I don't like the way Matthew has pushed it as an exclusive collectors item. If it is a big success you can guess how SMS will chose to price their products in the future - the sky is the limit!

My kit is number 168 of 505 what number is yours PRIVATEER?

PRIVATEER
01-22-2004, 11:46 PM
I have 164 of 505. I am hoping SMS is successful with this kit, because I would like to see more large scale stuff released. I love large scale, but it so hard to find GOOD stuff. Monogram has some 1/12 scale kits out there, but it is toy like compared to tamiya. Just my opinion.
