passlock problem

i have experienced the passlock problem..I have a 97 Malibu..took it to the dealer and quoted me a price of 450.00 to replace passlock sensor..
has anyone tried on their own?????
what are other alternatives????
anyone tried to disable the passlock system.??

if you live near north dallas i could fix it for less than $250
