2000 Stratus Tranny Problems

I'm having some transmission problems with my 2000 stratus ES.

Sometimes when I put the car in gear (D or R) it won't shift gears until I hit the gas pedal, then it finally jerks violently into gear.

Any thoughts on this? Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

After it slams into gear does your car stay in 1st gear?

I had this problem with mine and it called for replacing a sensor on the transmission. If this is what is happening let me know and I can get you the information on the sensor. The sensor itself runs about $12 and takes all of about 4 minutes to replace.

When it happens, it seems to go to 2nd gear. If I have the shifter in the Autostick position, it shows that its in second gear. However, it also happens when I am in reverse sometimes. It sits there until I rev it up a bit, then shifts violently into reverse. Once it kicks into gear though, it works normally, it does not get stuck in 1st gear.

Thanks!

Chad

It doesn't sound like the same problem that I had.

Sorry I couldn't help.

Check the level and condition of the transmission fluid. If the level is low (leaks) then air mixes with the fluid and causes a delayed shift. The fluid should be red not brown or orange, if it is not a healthy red or pink then get the trans. serviced (transmission oil changed and the filter replaced). If this still doesn't fix it then you probably have worn clutches and or bands inside the transmission indicating a far more serious repair/rebuild. The transmission controller can tell when things start to go wrong and will put the trans. into "limp in" mode which only gives you 2nd gear untill the car is shut off and the controller reboots at the next startup at which time it again checks to see if everything is OK or not.

Could you please send me the info on the sensors. Was your problem the input or output sensor? I have a friend w/a '00 stratus doing the same thing: eng light on, won't shift out of 1st, stalls when the brake is applied, and the speedometer isn't working. Thanks in advance.

There's a recall of the gearshift on the Stratus, check with your dealer.

I just went and checked, the recall is for 98's and it's for shift out of park, so it wouldn't apply to you. Here's the link if anyone else is interested, though.
