vtec not working

hey guys.i recently swapped a d16z6 in my 88 hatch.the vtec doesnt seem to be working.i have it connected to a toggle switch.when the engine is off and i hit the toggle switch u hear the vtec solinoid click on.but when im running the engine and reach 4000 rpm's i hit the switch and the vtec doesnt kick in.could there be something wrong with my engine or the vtec solenoid?could i have connected the switch wrong?anyone have any suggestions?i cant afford an rpm activation switch.im dead broke and have no way of getting money.thanks guys

how do you know its not working? on a stock d16z6, VTEC activation isnt really heard/felt, its more of a continuation of the powerband.
I suggest that you hook up a light to your switch circuit to make sure the circuit is connecting, which it should be since the solenoid is clicking.
next, i would remove the VTEC solenoid and check that the screen on the inside isnt clogged with particles from old oil, if so, clean and replace.

my d16z6 isnt stock.it has i/h/e and other extras.should i be able to hear it with my mods?i took the vtec solenoid out and gave it a good cleaning.haven't had the chance to try it yet.im gonna connect a light to it to see if it works.any other ideas?also how can i get more pressure from the oil pump?can that be it too?anyone with suggestions?thanx.
