I have a '97 Jetta, and this past weekend the AC suddenly quit. I'm guessing it needs to be recharged. I've never done this before, but it seems like it should be easy enough. My question is, which refrigerant do I use, and do I need any special equipment or will the kit the auto store sells work? Thanks.

I have a 97 Jetta and it uses 134a refrigerant. The kits at the auto store work fine. You should get one that has a gauge with it.

1994 plus vehicles take 134a. like cme said you can get it recharged with a kit. There is a reason why it SUDDENLY quit working though. Maybe you have a leak. You dont want to spend the money on a kit if its going to leak out again. Have someone do a leak test b-4 charging it again.
