you are a smart person because...
1)you are selling your ricer
2)you are buyin an old-skool-vee-dub
3)you want to put a vr6 in it
make sure you get a good vr6, get people who know their stuff, and make sure the swap is done right and everything works good.
good luck and the gods of the import world are smiling at you for your wise choice!

oh yeah an old gti can be from 1000 to 3000 depending on condition and the motor with tranny can be from 500 to 2000 also depending on condition

I too am about to switch to VW from Honda.. not because honda is a poor product, but my 99 Si was stolen, and i found a 2001 GTI 1.8t for about 2 grand cheaper than the NADA lists it for, and im actually really excited about this car. i think ill be frequenting this forum a lot more

You should put a VTEC or tuned VW 16 valve in your '84 GTI.
170 hp + 2k lbs. = great handling/acceleration
VR6 will make it too nose heavy.

an 84 gti with a 1.8 16V or turboed it faster and lighter than an 84 with VR6 cause VR6 is soooo heavy. it may be powerful, but the weight to power in this car the 16V is a faster car. if done right. also the VR6 doesn't fit quite right in these cars. the oil pan hangs reallll low. can't lower much without hitting. my friend flattened his pan on a small bump on the highway.

Got my 2004 gti 1.8t with sport tuned suspension and leather seats, drives like a dream, feels like a bimmer. Got mines for $19,999 the dealer was asking 22,415, with a down payment we agreed to this price, i love driving this car, finest car i owned, considering 0-60 6.5s, skidpad is .85-88g. Best car under 20,000 in my opinion.
