Ean,
$500 for a 97 Eclipse RS? That is a huge rip off!! Do not buy that car.
However would you happen to have his contact information? I would love to "chat" with him about the car. :D

Your right I totally missed that one. :-P Read it quickly and thought I read Eclipse laser as in the body kit. But yeah now it makes sense why you said that too, lol forums are not the same as talking to someone in person hehe.

It sounds like a great deal as long as the valves are the only problem.
You can just do head work. You would prob be looking at new valve, possibly new valve springs, valve grind, timing belt, head gasket kit, valve stem seals.
Thats not to much. So i say get the car. And fix it, then beat the hell out of it.

Well a head will still need work to put it into the car. You will have to make sure all the valves are seated properly, that all the springs are good, the valves are adjusted properly. Then you will need a head gasket kit and you could most likly bolt it right up.

I would certainly buy that car. A head rebuild should be no more than 250-300 including replacing bent valves, and almost all of the time the pistons survived the damage. You will also want to do a full tbelt job, which is about 300 in parts (including water pump of course) and labor depends. Try to have the dealer do the work, be very wary of regular mechanics that think they know how to do DSM tbelts, they are NOT at all the same as other cars. I would be surprised if the bent valves is another mechanics fualt, and the owner gave up after that. Even the dealer doesnt always know the right way to do it, but they have a much better chance, and typically do honor thier 12 month/12k miles part/labor warranty. My brother makes a good living on the side buying cars like this and reselling them ;)
Keep it simple. Straight up head rebuild, and tbelt job. You can get out of this whole thing for 11-1200 bucks if you know how to do the labor, or less than 2 grand if the dealer does the work. I often do this type of work for my local DSM club, so if you have a similar resource, you can often find someone that has done dozens of DSM tbelt jobs that will charge half what the dealer does for labor.
Either way good luck with it. Hope this info helps.
