Hard Shift

I have a 2004 Suburban that shifts fairly abruptly sometimes and you can also feel it kind of shudder when it shifts. This only does this when going from first to second. It has less than 1000k miles on it. Dealer seems to think there is nothing wrong. Drove a new Silverado today and it shifts seemlessly. Anyone else have this problem?? Or maybe I have the only one ever built.

Might not be much for compartive purposes...but my '99 with 100K miles shifts exactly the same way. First to second is quick and rather hard. I just assumed it's due to gearing that I'm not used to. I'm new to Burbs as I just bought mine used. So, I was wondering if this is common with all of them.

One other thing I've noticied. Mine has a serious craving for overdrive. When I gun it up the long hills (Colorado) it's constantly trying to shift out of third into OD. Of course, that results in loss of speed and I'm forced to kick down hard on the pedal again.

Guilow, when you are going up those hills and it keeps shifting back and forth, put it in drive not overdrive. It puts alot of strain on the trans and also alot of heat. You could always regear it to get rid of the overdrive woes, but then on flat land your gas mileage wouldnt be as good. It would be more fun though with a little more get up and go.

Tat,
Thanks, good recommendation. I didn't realize it was that bad for the engine.

Get a second opinion skidoos. Sounds like a problem that you shouldn't have to deal with this early in the game.

MIght be something that could be fixed with a new software load into the computer. It worked with my Wifes Grand Cherokee...same thing, rough first shift. Took it in to the dealer and they had a new version of software for the computer. It fixed it...

Don't know if this is similar to your prob, but I looked in the Alldata service bulletins for 2003 (04 not showing yet) and found this one:

I had the exact same problem with my 2002 I just bought, I will have to wait until I get home to check my receipts to tell you what was done. But I had to take my burb to two different dealerships before I got some positive results. I guess it's just like anything else there are some good mechanics and there are some who don't have a clue. Check your post 01-24-2004. I'll let you know what parts they changed in mine.
