I got about 1Grand saved up for my 99 DX Coupe...stock. I don't race but I do want performance, and as I've heard the D series (D16Y7) are hard to squeeze hp out of. Im looking at a catback and/or intake...some hp and nice sound better than looks ...swap or any hardcore engine mods not an option (esp. NOT NOS) Any suggestions would be very helpful

go for the swap!! but i know your set on not so.........
intake---> aem cai
exhaust------> greddy, dc sports, apexi, etc.
engine--------> cam gears, pulleys
headers-------> dc sports!
all of those will gain you some hp
hope that helps

After you get your car breathing better, you may want to step up the ignition system and get more fuel and a better spark to match the increased amount of air flowing through.

I think you should swap out a D16z6 motor the SOHC VTEC and then work from there those things can be really fast.

standard boltons wont make any difference to require increased fuel pressure or aftermarket ignition.
the stock setup will suffice and be more efficient than an MSD setup in his case.
i say if you want better performance without doing a swap, you should take the cash and car and trade it in for a better car.

well, maybe he wil in the future, and that wont require getting a better car (i.e. eclipse GST or GSX, or integra)

What are the expected hp % increases on these catbacks? What would you estimate the installation costs to be? I'm assuming all of them need welding right? From what dyno results i've seen, intakes get u the same hp as exhaust....maby I should go with an exhaust and see the difference....AEM w/ bypass valve of course. GReddy exhaust seems way overpriced...and I'm scarred to go with something cheap...what should I consider?
Thanks for yo help
THERMAL RD - STEALTH $469.00 USD + Tax
APEXi - N-1 $435.99 USD + Tax
GReddy - Evolution $599.00 USD + Tax

You shouldn't need to weld anything. I'm all for saving money while getting the same power. Any name short-ram intake with a K&N filter will do fine. The money you spend on a AEM CAI by then reducing its effeciency with a bypass valve is worthless IMHO. Headers by Hooker, HP Motorsports, or Chikara would do fine. And as for exhaust, this is the only place I woudn't skimp. You could go cheap and get a muffler and then have a shop weld you some pipes for it but you'd loose the resonator. And every car I've seen w/out a resonator sounds like crap. Every performance exhaust brings one with it so I say spend the extra dough for an Apexi, DC sports, or my favorite, Tanabe Racing Medallion.

I'm scarred about rain..esp when goin through puddles and it did happen...friend's engine coughed up so much smoke (some plymouth stock) but my stock intake had no problem and i passed thru the same puddle....and winter humidity can freeze up on the filter
1 grand on muffler for 3hp at the wheel...hahaha
...all this talk seems to point to one thing ->save up money for swap
