Rear Suspension Clunks

Hi,

I am new to this forum.
I've just put coilovers (very little drop, maybe 1/2") with KYB shocks on my 93 civic hatchback. I heard clunking noise everytime I go over bumps and cannot figure out why. I am able to localize it to the shock mounting area. I'm pretty sure it's not the plastic interior panels or anything in the trunk (I emptied everything).

One of my guess would be the car hopping on it's coilovers but is that possible with my car resting on the springs.

I'm not experienced so please help.

I have the same problem. It makes the noise when the wheel become unweighted, like a pothole, right?

I also traced to the shock tower mounting area, but I decided not to pursue the matter further until I replace my shocks.

Check to see if the strut is actually moving up/down in the mount. Have some one drive the car while you lay in the trunk. If that's the case, there is most likely a missing large washer under the upper strut mount bushing.

It also could be the hats on top of the shocks that need tightening. I have the clunk on both rear shocks where it used to be just the passenger side.

Yes, I did forget this at one time (before I test drive the car). I put on the large washer and now the strut does not stick out to the interior.

I also make sure I tighten it all the way.

I'm REALLY curios about this. I can trace it back to the strut mount but WHY? and HOW? is this sound emerging from??!!

It seems impossible for me that hatchback is so light in the rear that my car is bouncing.

By the way the clunking sound is like a damped metal-to-metal or plastic to metal.

Do you think honda can take a look at it for free? maybe with an oil change and have them take a look at it?

Honda will not look at anything for free especially aftermarket parts. The noise your hearing is from parts that don't fit like OEM.

What do you mean by the upper pillow ball mounts?

I am thinking of just going back to my stock springs since the coilover is too stiff anyway (350 psi, is it too stiff for a civic hatchback?)

That's nothing my friends who were National champions in STS in 2002 and 2003 run 500ft/lbs front springs and 700ft/lbs rear springs in the lighterweight 1989 Civic Si :)

The rubber bush is replaced with a pillow ball which eliminates the load input compliance, reduces the change of alignment to improve the grip of the tire. *NMB's (The world's top spherical bearing manufacture) pillow ball is used.
