To avoid chunks of Carbon on the EGR Stem, you have to remove it, check that; diaphragm and vaccum hoses are in good shape.
If not; replace/repair as necesary.
Clean and lubricate the EGR's stem with motor oil and grease.
To avoid chunks of carbon and/or black smoke, change the Oxygen Sensor, even if your computer or ye;;ow light or auto X ray or scanner does not show it as in failure, if you have a Gasoline consuption of 15 Miles per gallon city/highway or less it is time to replace it, Bosch Platinum premium only cost $ 24.00 dls in Pep boys and it is very easy to replace it every 25K. miles.
