oil leak, burn?

let me start off by saying that i feel stupid. im a graduate of a tech school and a graduate school for automotive. maybe i just am sick of thinking about my own car but either way, i want to go on with my mods but wont until this is fixed.

question one: i took my 00 teg gsr to acura for an oil leak. i should have just checked it myself because they said it was the oil filter not screwed on all the way. i felt stupid but the service writer said that the filter backing off is common. has anyone had this happen?

two: with the filter back on tight, oil consumption is still horrible. i do drive a ton, but keep up with 3k service. when at full throttle past vtec, i can smell oil burning but do not see any leak in my driveway. any thoughts?

i have had water in the engine(stupid rain), also have had the connection from filter to block replaced. oil is dark even though i add and change regularly but if its just the damn filter again im going to go crazy. help a bro in need. :banghead:

How much oil is your car using every 3k?

Filter's don't back-off themselves unless not tighten properly.

it has to be at at least two quarts, and not even in 3k. i can understand the filter not being tight because i let the kids at the school i went to do it, but the oil would have started leaking sooner. id say it started leaking well after the change, and i wasnt on a 3k cycle because i was adding a quart every two weeks. now i can smell the burning oil, but its only when i get on it. no leak in the driveway, but possibly leaking on the exhaust or even the block. when i look around the area, i dont see any oil, but i dont see how it can be burning. only a cold air on it hit 147 hp and 112 tq on the dyno, and according to my calculations that would mean its running at about 96% volumetric efficiency. i just took a nine hour trip and id say its about a quart to two shy, but ran like a dream. im going to my buddies shop tommarow to check it out, sorry to ramble on. if you think of anything ill check before i leave.

I had a similiar problem on my '98 GSR. I changed to Bosch Quad 4 Platinum plugs and started seeing about a quart of oil "disappear" every 3k. My mechanic told me to go back to NGK plugs. He said the Bosch plugs don't burn all of the fuel, which allows some oil to creep up into the cylinders.

In my case, I could not smell it at all, nor was there any evidence of leakage or use otherwise. He told me that it burns the oil in such small amounts that it will not be noticeable except in emissions testing and oil being low.

I decided to do some research and checked the NGK website. They mentioned that trying to improve oil control by burning the fuel more completely is the only viable reason for going to a hotter plug than stock.

I got the new plugs this week and am waiting for the wires to come in so I can do them all at once.

there is no leak on the engine like a cam seal leak?

Nope, I just had all of the top end seals and the "front" crank main seal replaced when they changed the timing belt and water pump. Besides, there is no oil leaking anywhere on the engine.
