Does anyone know what the laws, if any, there are against neon lights in your car in Maine?

States are different so your best source is to ask a local LEO. In general blue lights are going to get you in the most trouble. There is no problem as long as you only light them up in a parking lot.

Its best to check the local laws first.
Here in California, it is illegal just to have them installed on to your car

check the state / local police's website, or you can call the INFORMATION (not 9-1-1) phone line of your local police dept. I am sure they'll be glad to answer your question.

pick up the phone and call the local police station .. or check on your states DMV website they normally list the current laws on there someplace...

a basic rule of thumb .. cops frown on blue or red (wrather it is illegal or legal to have) ... and they frown on ones that flash ... but if you are only lighting them up in a parking lot and not driving .. they can not give you a ticket

Flea, you might want to rethink that answer, they can , if the mood strikes them write you a ticket even in a parking lot.

well you might want to study your laws a bit more ... a parking lot is private property ... so they can not write you a ticket without the owner of that property complaining about the light ... yes cops likely might write you a ticket while you are in a parking lot .. but when it is brought up in court the ticket will be dismissed because of the private property issues ...

if you check into the laws a bit more as well .. all of the lights and such that they say are illegal .. they say for off-road , off highway use only .. meaning .. if you are not on a public road .. they are legal ... parking lots are not public roads ... but most people are intimidated by cops .. so when they get a ticket in parking lots and have not had them on while on the road ... they go ahead and pay it ... instead of doing a little research.

Mr Flea,
If it can be seen from the highway you are fair game when it comes to lighting. The owner does not have to complain. The offroad means exactly
that....off any public road, if they wanted they could ticket you for just having them on the car.

Mr. Mad ... beleive what you wish ... if you are victim of such a ticket and paid it then that is your problem for not doing proper research ...

sure a cop could write me a ticket for not having any exhaust on my race car, and not having windshield wipers ... and for not having doors that function properly ... but those tickets would just be laughed out of court less that cop caught me driving it on a public road ... if i had it in a parking lot driving it around but never hit the road then they do not have the authority to issue tickets .. less the property owner has complained about it ...

that is why when there are accidents on parking lots .. there are no tickets wrote ...

i have green on my car and have had no problems. if they see you with red or blue they'll probably $#!* a brick, but if you have anything else, you should be OK. just to be safe i turn mine off when i get on the freeway. i've never had a problem on city streets.

and be sure to figure out which cities don't mind and which ones do. my friend gets warnings all the time for his in one city and i've never been stopped. depends on the cops

BEWARE OF UTAH--IF YOU HAVE NEON!!!

I spent 4 hours putting on neon ground effect lights on my stealth, and within 15 minutes of being out on the road I was pulled over and got a ticket.

The officer said that even to have them on my car was illegal.

This law is stupid!!!

I live in GA and you can have neons as long as they don't flash(which I have strobes) and if it is undercar the bulb does not show. I run l.e.d s on the front by the bird and under the hood. I also have a neon tube in the back (never got to any trouble except for the strobes)

You can have strobes if they don't know(lol)

I would have to say it depends on the cop, location, and what the heck you are doing. If your going 75 on a highway with neons of course he is going to nail you for those as well. I know the pulse kits are hated by cops. I don't know about the red or blue colors...but it would be safe to assume that they are not the colors to have as they are emergancy colors. Also orange would be another not to have cause that is used alot by constructions. So as crappy as it is, you are left with purple and green... Definately check the laws first, and do be an idoit and drive with them on in places you know there are going to be cops...

Accually Fleas answer is basicly how the laws are. Every state has its own laws and the best bet is to go to your local PD and ask an officer. I live in Wisconsin and I asked my friends dad who is the chief of Police in my city and he said that All neons except for white are illegal while in motion. If u have white u can drive with them on but only if they arent too bright. But If you are parked on the side of the street they can be on and its prefectly legal unless you have blue because blue is illegal no matter if ur parked or moving because cops are the only ones who can have blue lights. But thats just how it is here in Wisconsin...other states are often different.
