Engine swap in 95

My 4 cylinder(2.0L) Probe has a blown head gasket. Before I go to all the trouble to tear the motor apart, I was hoping to find out if the base model would be able to accept the PGT 2.5L V6. Can anyone speak to this? I have read there are some minor differences between the base, SE and GT, but most deal with exhaust or trim.

Unless you want to spend enough to buy a used Probe GT don't think about a 4 cyl to 6 cyl swap. There is way too much to change over (engine, tranny, wiring harness, ECU, springs and struts [different on the GT], exhuast [from the headers to the cat back...all different], radiator, etc.)

It's cheaper to sell your current car and buy a GT.

hey, before you put that new head gasket on, make sure you get a valve job done. The guy that i bought my probe off put a new head gasket didnt get a valve job done, and i had no compression cuz everyone of the valves were leaking. Cost about 100 bux just for head gasket and bolts for the head. Might wanna check your water pump, thats how mine blew water pump went out started leaking, had to get a new one of thoes to.

Fizer70, thanks for your info. Well, I already figured I would be replacing engine, transmission and halfshafts. I was planning to replace the exhaust anyway (headers, etc.) I have new (lowering) springs for the car, which specify being able to be used on either model. Thanks for a heads up on the struts.

I have a chance to purchase a wrecked GT for less than an engine. The GT is intact from the dash forward. This will include ECU, etc. I just didn't want to buy it and start removing/installing and find the engine bay an inch too short, or the motor mounts were in a slightly different place. If I have to start cutting, it isn't worth the effort.

Cost also isn't a factor -- My Base + wrecked GT + money already spent on fixing up base < $800

TE10984: I had also planned to have a valve job done when I took the heads in. No sense tearing the motor down that far without doing that little bit extra. Thanks.

Nice :thumbsup: It sounds like a good project then. BTW, you need to change the dash guage cluster as well. The spedo/tach is different.
